Toshiba today announced the availability of their first RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substance) notebook sold at U.S. retail. The Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 is currently available through Wal-Mart for $697.
The Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064, said Toshiba, is a more environmental friendly computer whose standards are based off of a environmental directive set by the European Parliament that goes into effect on July 1 of this year. The goal of the directive is to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
“The launch of an RoHS-compatible notebook sold through the world’s largest retailer is part of Toshiba’s overall commitment to the environment,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division (DPD), Toshiba America Information Systems, in a statement. “Toshiba DPD believes strongly in ensuring all our notebooks are compatible with the RoHS standard. It’s part of Toshiba Corporation’s goal to double its overall product and business process eco-efficiency from 2000 to 2010.”
The Satellite A55-S1064 features includes a 1.60-GHz Intel Celeron M Processor 380, 512 MB DDR2 memory, 40 GB hard drive, a 15-inch display, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive and built-in 802.11 b/g wireless LAN.
