So we’ll call it a success, then? Six years after its release, World of Warcraft continues to remain one of the most played games in history, with over 12 million subscribers currently paying to play each month.
According to Gamesindustry.biz, Blizzard defines a subscriber as “those paying a subscription fee or using an active prepaid card, and those that are using the free month of access with a new purchase of the game. It does not include free, expired or cancelled subs and prepaid cards.”
The milestone moment came following the release of the expansion pack “The Wrath of the Lich King” in China, which is ironic as China’s government disapproves of video games in general, which is why consoles like the PS3 and the Xbox 360 have not been able to gain traction in the country.
But don’t expect Blizzard to stop there. The upcoming expansion, World at Warcraft: Cataclysm, has recently been announced for December 7, and Blizzard is promising that the new material will give the entire game a fresh new look,
“The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today,” Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard said.
“We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights, and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm in December.”
