Kickstarter's first crowdfunded sex toy raises $30,000 on its first day

Kickstarter is exploring uncharted territory. On Thursday, for the very first time, the crowdfunding platform became the temporary home to its very first sex toy. Its name is Fin, and it’s the product of the Brooklyn-based company Dame Products, whose first claim to fame was its Eva invention. Described as a “finger vibrator engineered to augment touch,” this new product promises to be unobtrusive, intuitive to use, and designed in a function-first manner.

Conceptualized with the hope of closing the “pleasure gap” between men and women, the Fin is “designed to feel like a part of you, so you can be a part of something amazing,” according to its newly launched Kickstarter page. Constructed with medical-grade silicon and making use of a three-speed motor, Fin promises quality in every sense of the word.

In a notably female-positive move for Kickstarter, the internet company has recognized Dame Products’ commitment to “desensationalizing toys for sex,” and moreover, addressing the common disparity in sexual satisfaction between men and women. As Dame Products points out, “women are over four times more likely to describe recent sex as ‘not at all pleasurable'” when compared to their male counterparts. But Fin hopes to change that.

“We’re thrilled to be launching our second campaign, following the success of our first product, Eva,” says Alexandra Fine, CEO of Dame Products. “Turning to crowdfunding is a conscious decision on our part — something we find crucial when designing products like ours. The immediate feedback and constant two-way communication with our customers allows us to gain insight into the industry in a valuable way.”

Along with Janet Lieberman, an MIT-educated mechanical engineer, Fine noted that her goal in co-founding Dame Products was “to expand the sexual experiences of womankind and introduce unique, woman-oriented options into an oft-outdated industry.”

“Our mission is to listen to, study, and ultimately design around women’s real, unmet needs,” Lieberman noted, “I spent years engineering top-of-the-line products, but I found myself consistently accepting lower standards when it came to sex toys. We founded Dame Products out of the belief that sex toys should be held to the same standards as any other consumer product. We feel we’ve accomplished that with Fin.”

On its first day on Kickstarter, Fin has already managed to raise nearly $30,000 of its $50,000 goal from over 400 backers. So if you’re interested in being part of Kickstarter history, this may be the project to back.

CES 2023: HD Hyundai’s Avikus is an A.I. for autonomous boat and marine navigation
Demonstration of NeuBoat level 2 autonomous navigation system at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

This content was produced in partnership with HD Hyundai.
Autonomous vehicle navigation technology is certainly nothing new and has been in the works for the better part of a decade at this point. But one of the most common forms we see and hear about is the type used to control steering in road-based vehicles. That's not the only place where technology can make a huge difference. Autonomous driving systems can offer incredible benefits to boats and marine vehicles, too, which is precisely why HD Hyundai has unveiled its Avikus AI technology -- for marine and watercraft vehicles.

More recently, HD Hyundai participated in the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, to demo its NeuBoat level 2 autonomous navigation system for recreational boats. The name mashes together the words "neuron" and "boat" and is quite fitting since the Avikus' A.I. navigation tech is a core component of the solution, it will handle self-recognition, real-time decisions, and controls when on the water. Of course, there are a lot of things happening behind the scenes with HD Hyundai's autonomous navigation solution, which we'll dive into below -- HD Hyundai will also be introducing more about the tech at CES 2023.

There's a scene in Mission Impossible 3 that you might recall. In it, our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) tackles the movie's villain, holds him at gunpoint, and forces him to read a bizarre series of sentences aloud.

"The pleasure of Busby's company is what I most enjoy," he reluctantly reads. "He put a tack on Miss Yancy's chair, and she called him a horrible boy. At the end of the month, he was flinging two kittens across the width of the room ..."
