Volvo drivers, rejoice! Your car manufacturer has seen the light of the digital music revolution, announcing a partnership today with PhatNoise to offer two dealer-installed solutions to enjoy MP3s. One involves your iPod, with the other being a customized version of PhatNoise’s PhatBox player.
The iPod solution, known as the Volvo iPod Adapter ($150) will be available for the S60, S80 and V70/XC70 models. It allows connection by plugging the iPod into a cable located in the car’s armrest compartment. Control of the player is accomplished through the Volvo’s sound system and steering wheel controls, while at the same time charging the iPod.
The on-board Digital Jukebox ($898), meanwhile, is much the same as PhatNoise’s PhatBox Digital Media Player. It integrates with the Volvo’s existing stereo and steering wheel controls and features a removable 20GB hard drive which can be used to store up to 500 CDs of music. The hard drive is attached to a computer via a USB port and music management is handled through special software.
“For Volvo, PhatNoise was unquestionably the right partner. Their full service approach delivers innovative technology in a way that resonates with consumers and is right in line with Volvo’s unprecedented commitment to safety,” said Thomas Andersson, executive vice president, marketing for Volvo Cars of North America. “By allowing our customers to easily access their favorite songs on the iPod or the Digital Jukebox through the vehicles existing controls, consumers are free from distraction in order to keep their eyes on the road.
