Apple announces iPhone deal with China Mobile, world’s largest wireless carrier

apple announces iphone deal with china mobile worlds largest wireless carrier 5s rear lineup

It’s the Christmas present Apple boss Tim Cook had been hoping for all year – an iPhone deal with China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless carrier. The 5S and 5C handsets will start selling with the world’s largest wireless carrier from January 17 as part of a “multi-year agreement”, the two companies announced Sunday.

The deal has been years in the making, with delays thought to have been caused by network issues and sales volume guarantees. Although China Unicom and China Telecom already offer the iPhone in the country, this latest deal gives the Cupertino company access to China Mobile’s enormous user base, which comprises in excess of 760 million people.

The tie-up is a real boost for Apple in a market where strong competition from the likes of Samsung and other companies offering cheaper handsets has put pressure on growth. Market analyst company Canalys said that in Q3 2013 Apple’s share of the smartphone market in China stood at about 6 percent, while Samsung enjoyed a healthier 21 percent share.

Though Apple this year launched the more competitively priced 5C handset, it still costs more than many rival Android phones, a factor that could continue to hinder growth as consumers in the Asian country seek out cheaper phones.

News of the deal between Apple and China Mobile comes as the carrier begins the rollout of its 4G service to 340 cities across China. China Mobile’s iPhone will support its 4G/TD-LTE and 3G/TD-SCDMA networks, providing customers with a high-speed mobile service, the carrier said.

Apple boss Tim Cook said his company is “excited” to start working with China Mobile, adding that the country is “an extremely important market for Apple.”

Research firm Trefis told the Wall Street Journal recently that the tech giant’s deal with China Mobile could result in about 1.5 million iPhone activations each month in 2014, bringing Apple an extra 20 million sales by the end of the year.

Motorola Moto G Pure (Tracfone) -- $50, was $60

The low price of the Motorola Moto G Pure doesn't mean that it's an unreliable smartphone, as it offers a surprisingly decent 13MP camera for an entry-level model for daytime shots, in addition to a nice water-repellent design. Apple iPad (64GB, Wi-Fi, 7th Gen) -- $220, was $249

This Apple iPad 7th generation might not be very new anymore but thanks to Apple supporting its products for a while to come, it remains a good option for those wanting to keep costs down. This particular model is refurbished so it's had a previous owner but has since been restored to excellent quality, just like if you bought it new. It offers a 10.2-inch Retina display with a 2160 x 1620 resolution, Apple A10 Fusion chip, and a massive 128GB of storage space. It also has a 8MP camera although it's best suited for occasional snaps or video calls rather than pure photography. It's a great introduction to tablets if you want something iPadOS based without spending a lot.

If you don't mind purchasing refurbished stock that looks like new, Walmart has one of the best iPad deals today. Right now, you can buy the Apple iPad 7th generation for only $200 saving you $49 off the usual price. Of course, it's a refurbished unit but Walmart promises that it works and looks like new so you're not missing out on anything other than spending more cash. It's an older model but thanks to Apple supporting iPads for a long time, you'll be fine. Here's a deeper look at what to expect from your new acquisition.

Why you should buy the Apple iPad
The Apple iPad 7th generation was launched back in 2019. Four years old, it's still reasonably powerful if you don't mind a few concessions in exchange for owning an iPadOS-based tablet. It's powered by the A10 Fusion processor that was seen in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. It can still handle plenty of multitasking so there are no concerns there, although we'd recommend this as a tablet for someone who doesn't mind being a few steps behind technologically. After all, this isn't one of the best tablets anymore, but it's ideal for entertainment purposes.
