How to choose a tablet on Presidents Day

If you’re simply looking for the best tablet money can buy among all the ongoing Presidents Day tablet sales, then the choice is clear: Apple’s iPad is the king of this realm. The standard 10.2-inch iPad is great for most people and is very affordable, but the 7.9-inch iPad Mini, new 10.9-inch 4th-gen iPad Air, and high-end iPad Pro (available at 11 or 12.9 inches) are all fantastic choices, depending on your needs and budget. That said, Apple’s not the only game in town anymore, and other tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab line and the Microsoft Surface series have come a long, long way in recent years. You’ve got plenty of options to choose from if Apple isn’t your flavor.

The iPad is the tablet we recommend for most people and is the best choice if, like most people in the U.S., you use an iPhone (as your phone and tablet will share a common software ecosystem, making it easier to sync and share everything between devices as well as with other iOS users). If you’re a member of the Android crowd, on the other hand, then the best choice is the Samsung Galaxy Tab lineup. The Galaxy Tab S7 in particular is simply the best Android tablet on the market right now.

Unlike with Android and iOS smartphones, however, your choice of tablet operating system is not a binary one. Along with Android and iPad, there are good tablets today that run on Amazon’s Fire software (which is Android-based), Google’s cloud-based Chrome OS, and even Windows. It’s also worth noting that Chrome OS and Android share an app ecosystem. That means you can now run Android apps on Chrome OS tablets as well as Chromebooks.

Chrome OS tablets are rarer than Chromebooks, and our favorite is the excellent Lenovo IdeaPad Duet. This 10-inch tablet has the advantage of coming with an included keyboard case that lets you use it as a lightweight laptop. For those on the tightest of budgets who are shopping for the cheapest Presidents Day tablet deals — and especially for those who have Amazon Prime — the Kindle Fire line offers a lot of bang for the buck. The Fire 7 is a bit too basic for our liking, but the Fire HD 8 hits a nice sweet spot in utility, size, and price, with the Fire HD 10 being a nice upgrade pick that’s still pretty affordable.

If you’re looking for a Windows tablet — particularly one you can use as a 2-in-1 laptop — Microsoft has that market cornered with its Surface Pro family. The Surface Pro devices are superb, and the Surface Pro 7 paired with a Type Cover keyboard is actually the best 2-in-1 laptop in our opinion. These can get expensive; however, at roughly the same price as the iPad Pro models, but Presidents Day tablet sales are a great chance to find one at a discount. The best deals are arguably on bundles that include accessories like the Type Cover Keyboard and/or Surface Pen stylus.
