Why Prime Day is the best time to buy chargers and cables

Thanks to Amazon’s Prime Day, you can pick up some fantastic Prime Day deals on items like TVs, headphones, and soundbars. But now is also a great time to stock up on smaller items you might need like cables and chargers. For this Prime Day, Amazon is offering up to 40% of chargers and cables including everything from Lightning cables to USB Type-C cables to HDMI cables. This is the cheapest that these items will be all year, even including Black Friday, so now is the best time to pick up these small but essential items.

AmazonBasics USB Type-C to USB-A Cable — $6, was $8

USB charger cables are one of those things you can never have enough of, and this Amazon Basics USB charging cable is the kind of thing it’s always handy to have on hand for charging items like phones and tablets. At 6 feet in length, there’s plenty of slack to charge from an out of the way socket or to allow you to continue using your device while it’s charging. It even supports the charging of USB Type-C devices such as MacBook, Chromebook Pixel, or Galaxy Note 7, as well as other USB devices. The cable was $8, but is now down to $6.

AmazonBasics Braided Lightning-to-USB Cable — $8, was $13

If you’ve never tried braided cables before then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. These wrapped cables are more durable and can withstand much more use and abuse than standard plastic covered cables, and they feel good to use as well. This Lightning-to-USB A cable is 3 feet long, so it’s ideal for charging on your desk, and it’s compatible with most iPhones and some iPads and iPods. It was $13, and is now down to $8.

AmazonBasics Dual-Port 24W USB Wall Charger — $9, was $13

A USB wall charger is another of those gadgets that are useful to have on hand, so you can pick up this charger and keep it at your office or in your bag so you’ll always have one to hand when you need it. This 24 Watt dual port option supports charging for two USB devices, such as two phones or one phone and one tablet. There’s also device protection and an internal safety switch to keep your devices safe while they’re charging. The charger was originally $13 and is now down to $9.

What goes on sale on Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon's biggest sales event of the year. Since launching in 2015 to celebrate Amazon's birthday, Prime Day deals have gone from strength to strength with 2020's Prime Day achieving record-breaking sales up 45.2% on the previous year. With over $10 billion worth of goods bought globally during the sales event, it's a fantastic time for you -- the consumer -- to dive in and pick up a great Prime Day deal. Read on as we look at exactly what goes on sale during the two-day sales event and what to expect from the big shopping event.
What do I need to do to buy on Prime Day?
Unlike other sales events, there is an exclusivity factor to Prime Day. Only Prime members can benefit from the savings going on during the two-day event although consumers partaking in a free 30-day trial of Prime can also be a part of the massive shopping event. Make sure you have a Prime membership in some form in time for the sale.
What can I buy during Prime Day?
Honestly, mostly everything. We'll dive into further detail about what kind of deals tend to occur but it's safe to say that pretty much everything can be on sale during Prime Day. Initially a big event for Amazon-branded products and technology, Prime Day now covers all kinds of things from cooking equipment to cleaning gear, books, Blu-rays, and much more. As with any sales purchase, we strongly recommend checking out all our buying guides and best products roundups so that you've thoroughly researched what you're looking to buy.
What to expect in the Prime Day sales
Amazon Products
Understandably, Amazon is always keen to discount its own products during the Prime Day sales. Each year, we tend to see big discounts on a wide range of Amazon-based products. These include price cuts for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Fire tablets, Amazon Echo smart speaker devices, Fire TV sticks, along with other products owned by Amazon.

In recent times, that's meant discounts on the Ring Video Doorbell along with smart plugs and other devices to make your home smarter in how it runs. Basically, if a product has Alexa support, it's often reduced during the Prime Day sales which can even mean price cuts for Alexa-enabled TVs and robotic vacuums.
Technology
Technology is one of the biggest areas where you'll see price cuts during the Prime Day sales. That area can cover a wide range of products. Generally, there are discounts on the latest smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy range as well as major laptop brands. Prime Day 2020 saw a massive $150 on the Apple MacBook Air and we'd expect to see similar again this year. Other brands such as the Microsoft Surface, numerous Chromebooks, and Windows laptops from Asus and Lenovo are likely to be discounted too.

Why you should be doing all your holiday shopping right now
Person using a Ring doorbell.

If the recent shopping extravaganza that was Prime Day showed us anything, it’s that now is the time to take advantage of discounts on, well, everything. As we head toward the holidays we’re seeing phenomenal deals on all kinds of tech — from laptops, to 4K TVs to Nintendo Switches — as well as items for your kitchen, vacuums, Smart Home additions; really everything. And this year, it’s more important than ever to act quickly, to make sure you get your item delivered by the big day!

This is not a year like any other year. One thing we witnessed throughout Prime Day was longer shipping times, especially as the day wore on. The reasons are clear. The COVID-19 global pandemic has really gummed up the works, even for big retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. The fact is, the pandemic has caused, and continues to cause, a disruption in distribution. Things just take longer: Trucks need to be cleaned and disinfected; suppliers have to account for or replace affected staff; suppliers that were affected or eliminated have to be replaced. At the same time, demand has increased. People want items delivered; they don’t want to venture out to the stores. Which means the system has even more to deal with, using less resources.
