1930’s cartoon platformer Cuphead coming to Xbox One and Steam

Studio MDHR’s upcoming 2D run-and-gun fighting platformer Cuphead is practically on the verge of achieving a retro singularity. Visually the game stands out immediately for its gorgeous, hand-drawn animations in the style of 1920’s and 30’s Disney cartoons. The developers aren’t cutting any corners, creating all sprites with traditional cell animation over watercolor backgrounds with an instrumental jazz soundtrack.

The gameplay, though, appears to be no less studied and lovingly crafted. This new trailer from E3 shows off what it looks like in action:

Cuphead is a classic, side-scrolling run-and-gun, focused on 1-on-1 (or 2-on-1 in multiplayer) boss battles. The two brothers making up up the team behind the game are diligent students of the genre: rather than just cashing in on easy retro appeal skinned with a cool aesthetic, they are passionately into the nitty gritty of fine-tuning hitboxes and developing unpredictably responsive enemy AI.

Inspirations cited include classics like Contra IIISuper Mario WorldMega Man X, Street Fighter III, and Gunstar Heroes. Increasing the difficulty gives the bosses new sets of attacks and patterns, and a playable world map full of secrets allows for new weapons and powers to give you plenty of tactical options and replayability.

If everything remains on schedule, Cuphead will be released for PC (via Steam) and Xbox One sometime in late 2014.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course makes the whole game better
Cuphead fights a snow wizard in Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course.

I didn’t quite love Cuphead as much as I wanted to when it launched in 2017 -- you could say it wasn’t my cup of tea, if you must. I loved its old-timey cartoon art style, but its crushing difficulty made it hard to love. I just wanted to admire all the gorgeous hand-drawn animations, but the skill barrier made me bounce off the game before I got to the end.

We played Diablo Immortal on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Steam Deck — and one was a mess
The Steam Deck running Battle Net launcher and the S22 Ultra running Diablo Immortal.

This wasn’t supposed to be a difficult story to write. In theory, all I had to do was play Diablo Immortal on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and on the Steam Deck and compare the experience on the devices. However, because of the many frustrating aspects of Blizzard's launcher — and the conflicts I experienced with it and the Steam Deck’s hardware and software — I ended up sinking a huge amount of time into troubleshooting rather than playing. In fact, I could probably have beaten the main Diablo Immortal story on the S22 Ultra in the time it took to troubleshoot the game launcher on the Steam Deck.
Setup process: Simple on S22 UItra; nearly impossible on Steam Deck
Getting started with Diablo Immortal on the Galaxy S22 is a piece of cake. I opened the Google Play Store, downloaded the game, and that's all there was to it. On the Steam Deck, it was a completely different story.

The problem is that the PC version of Diablo Immortal isn’t on Steam, and is designed to be played with a keyboard and mouse. In order to install it, you’ve got to go through desktop mode on the Steam Deck and install the Battle.net launcher using Proton compatibility software — and only then can you download the game through the Battle.net launcher. However, once I installed the launcher, I encountered a bug with Battle.net that prevented me from downloading Diablo Immortal.
