Awesome Games Done Quick will be online-only in 2023

The Games Done Quick organization has announced the return of its charity speedrunning event Awesome Games Done Quick for its usual January time slot. However, the event will be online-only this year, rather than returning to the physical show it was pre-pandemic.

While Awesome Games’ sister event, Summer Games Done Quick, returned to 2022 with an in-person physical event, it seems it is going a different route. In a press release, Games Done Quick confirmed that AGDQ will hit computer screens everywhere on January 8-15 in 2023, with an online-exclusive streaming marathon. This was the case during 2021 and 2022’s AGDQ, and 2021’s SGDQ as well.

No reason is cited as the purpose behind Games Done Quick’s choice to limit AGDQ to an online-only event. Despite this, the event has run smoothly in the past when it strayed from in-person festivities, so the shift should offer no basis for concern.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2023, held in support of Prevent Cancer Foundation, is set to begin its highly celebrated 24 hours a day speedrunning marathon on January 8, 2023. The event will run from then until January 15, 2023. Anyone interested can catch all the action early next year on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel. A schedule for the event will be released at a later date on the official Games Done Quick website.

Summer Game Fest returns just before E3 2023 next June

Geoff Keighley has confirmed when Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023. It will begin with a live kickoff show on June 8, 2023, placing Keighley's game announcement alternative less than a week before E3's grand (intended) 2023 return.
Unlike past years, Summer Game Fest Live Kickoff 2023 will feature a live audience, like Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards. It will take place in the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park, with tickets going on sale in early 2023. It will still be livestreamed across platforms like YouTube and Twitch, though. It's currently unknown who's participating, how long Summer Game Fest will run afterward, or if it will feature a Summer Game Fest Play Days-like element for fans. Still, Keighley says all of that info will be revealed ahead of the event next year, teasing what people can expect.
"In keeping with tradition, we'll have tons of exciting announcements from the developers that are pushing the games industry forward, and will once again highlight other publisher digital events, demos, and more surprises to be announced in the coming months," Keighley says in a press release.
That June 8 start date, and the other Summer Game Fest events likely to follow, put Keighley's show just ahead of E3 2023. The ESA and ReedPop plan to bring E3 back between June 13 and June 16, 2023. With five days of lead time on E3, Summer Game Fest can coexist with the long-running gaming conference and encompass the plethora of publisher showcases that tend to precede E3.
Geoff Keighley made it clear that he wants Summer Game Fest and E3 to coexist for a while. "We've had extensive conversations with ReedPop about E3," he said in an interview with Epic Games Store. "I think it'll kind of fit together and flow kind of from what we're doing into what they're doing and stuff. E3, to me, is this kind of master brand that represents gaming news in June."
With the start date of Summer Game Fest confirmed, the coexistence of these two summer gaming events is a reality. Summer Game Fest returns on June 8, 2023.

Due to concerns over COVID-19, Games Done Quick has made the decision to move its next major event, Awesome Games Done Quick 2022, to an online-only format. In a statement posted on Twitter by the organization, it said the decision came "after much deliberation."

Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 is the fourth major Games Done Quick event in a row to move to an online-only format. According to Games Done Quick's director of operations, Matt Merkle, it was difficult to move the event online. On Twitter, Merkle wrote: "There was considerable discussion behind this one. I pushed really hard to try and come up with a way to do it in-person. But there's simply no way."

Awesome Games Done Quick 2021

Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 is still a few months away, but its organizers have already decided that the speedrunning showcase will be an online-only event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

AGDQ 2021 will not feature a live venue, as has traditionally been done in previous years, according to an update on the official Games Done Quick website. Instead, the event will be broadcast through a studio, with the speedrunners participating from within their homes.
