Ageia Technologies, today at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, unveiled what they are calling the first physics processing unit (PPU) designed to power pervasive real-time physics in PC gaming. The new Ageia PhysX Accelerator will initially appear in computers from manufacturers such as Alienware and Dell, add-in boards from Asus and BFG and in-game support from more than 60 software developers and publishers.
The Ageia PhysX processor, said the company, has been specifically designed to accelerate dynamic physical motion and interaction in games which are optimized for the hardware-accelerated physics provided by the PPU. In an example Ageia cited,
