‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ teases the villain The Shocker

The upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already packed with the villains Electro, Rhino, and the Green Goblin, but it appears that one more may make his big screen debut as well. The character Herman Schultz, aka The Shocker, was mentioned on the film’s Tumblr page.

shockerA faux news story appearing on the Tumblr describes Spidey’s arrest of a new baddie. “New York’s superhuman vigilante caught the mechanically augmented robber, suspected in two previous bank heists, as he fled the scene with the stolen loot.”

The Tumblr then went on to name the suspect as “disgruntled engineer, Herman Schultz.” It goes on to say that Schultz created wrist gauntlets “capable of emitting a vibratory wave of pressure that proved capable of tearing apart a four-foot thick steel vault.”

In the comics Schultz is known by his alias The Shocker, a villain first introduced in 1967. The “news” story is nowhere near confirmation that the character will actually appear in the film, but it could pave the way for The Shocker to appear in future Spider-Man movies, or even the recently announced Sinister Six spin-off – in the comics, the original Sinister Six consisted of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, and Sandman. A later version of the team then introduced The Shocker.

With three confirmed villains already, introducing a fourth might be problematic, but the Tumblr at least confirms that the character is active in the film’s universe. The author of the story, Ned Leeds, could also be either a future plot point, or at least an Easter Egg for fans.

In the comics, Leeds and Peter Parker sparred over the affections of Daily Bugle secretary Betty Brant. During an investigation, Leeds discovered the lair of the Hobgoblin, a villain that used Norman Osborn’s (aka the Green Goblin) equipment. The history of the character gets a little confusing after that. Originally he was a straight up villain, but later stories expanded on his history and claimed he was brainwashed. Regardless, the character is deeply embedded in the Spider-Man comic lore.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gets wild gameplay trailer, but no release date
Kraven the Hunter appears in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Insomniac Games showed off a new gameplay trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 during Sony's May 2023 PlayStation Showcase. The action-packed clip showed off its villain, the iconic Kraven the Hunter, but it didn't give the game a release date. It's still only scheduled for fall 2023.

The new trailer gave us our closest glimpse at Sony's upcoming release we've seen yet. It begins with a very cinematic clip showing off classic Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter. From there, we flash-forward a bit to New York City, where we see Peter Parker and Miles Morales working together to save the city. Parker has a fancy new black suit with a lot of wild powers. In the trailer, we see multiple black spider arms coming out of it and slamming enemies.

Everything announced at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase
Snake stares into the distance in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's reveal trailer

The flurry of summer gaming showcases is finally upon us, and Sony was the one to start things off. After a 20-month wait and several smaller presentations, we finally got another PlayStation Showcase where we saw what's next for first-party, third-party, and indie games on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2. During the show, we got a look at some upcoming multiplayer games from PlayStation Studios like Fairgame$ and Marathon, in addition to exciting single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Third-party studios also showed up, with Square Enix unveiling a multiplayer game called Foamstars, Alan Wake 2 and Assassin's Creed Mirage getting release dates, and Konami announcing a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. This was definitely the most important PlayStation livestream to happen in a long time, but it was a densely packed show so you might have missed out on some of its announcements. That's why you should read through this recap of everything announced during the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase.

You need to read this free Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic
Miles Morales and Peter Parker stand together in Spider-Man 2.

While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is supposed to come out sometime this fall, we don't actually have that much information on the video game's narrative or any other differences from its predecessors. That's why those looking forward to the game should check out the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic, which was previously released physically, but is now available for free on Marvel's website.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023) No. 1, which was written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Ig Guara, was released physically on May 6 for Free Comic Book Day. Now, just a few days later, Insomniac Games and Marvel have followed up on their promise to make the book available digitally for free, so you can easily read it on Marvel.com.
It's a breezy read that doesn't contain many shocking revelations, but gives more context on what Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Mary Jane Watson have been up to since the events of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. In terms of new villains introduced here that could show up in the game, the Spider-Men fight The Tarantula, an arachnid-themed assassin, and The Hood, a gang leader who's trying to use magic for personal gain.
On the more character-focused side of things, we learn that Peter, Miles, and MJ are now all working together as a tight crime-fighting unit. Peter is now trying to get a teaching certificate and to convince MJ to move in with him. As Peter now lives in Aunt May and Uncle Ben's old house in Queens, that could mean we'll get to explore more boroughs of New York City in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile, Miles decides to pursue a Music Technology major at Empire State University, and J. Jonah Jameson decides to buy back ownership of the Daily Bugle.
There's little more than a passing mention of Norman Osborn, and we don't see Harry Osborn, Kraven, or Venom in action, so there aren't any must-know reveals from this free comic. Still, it's worth a read if you want to get reacquainted with this Marvel universe, the headspace of the heroes within it, and the gadgets they use ahead of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's launch.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will release exclusively for PlayStation 5 sometime this fall.
