Apex Legends adds ‘cool dad representation’ with new hero

Apex Legends‘ latest season, Saviors, is around the corner and it’s adding a new hero: Newcastle. During a press event, Respawn Entertainment shared new details about the character, including his support move set and dad-inspired design.

Newcastle has one of Apex Legends‘ most intriguing backstories to date. Newcastle is a Captain America-like superhero in the game’s world who has tried and failed to qualify for the Apex Legends tournament time and time again. As it turns out, he’s so desperate to enter it because he’s in deep in debt. When a negotiation with his loan sharks turns violent, Newcastle’s dad, who’s related to Bangalore, decides to don the Newcastle mask and enter the battle royale in place of his son.

Described as a “protector,” Newcastle’s fatherly status isn’t just a fun piece of backstory. It’s a fundamental, guiding philosophy to all pieces of his design. In describing the character, the team jokes that they were excited to finally bring “cool dad representation” to the series.

In terms of his look, Newcastle wears a white superhero suit that includes a shield. If it looks a little tight on him, that’s on purpose — he’s wearing his younger son’s suit, after all. The team notes that they looked to give the character a traditional “dad bod” for the game, giving him a natural body type that we usually don’t get to see in video games.

His move kit is entirely built around his shield, which gives him a support utility. His tactical ability is called Mobile Shield and it allows him to create an energy wall that can block incoming projectiles. It can even deflect some projectiles, sending them bouncing back at an enemy. It’s destructible though, and enemies will be able to target the top and bottom of it to break it down.

His ultimate, Castle Wall, follows a similar philosophy. Newcastle leaps into the air and slams down to create a “fortress” or sorts made up of one giant shield. While it doesn’t do any damage on impact, enemies who get to close will get slowed down by its electric field.

His most exciting and potentially game-changing ability is his passive perk, Retrieve the Wounded. Whenever Newcastle revives a fallen teammate, he’ll be able to drag them while doing so. When reviving, a shield will appear in front of him, protecting them both from incoming fire. Interestingly, that shield’s power is based on what knockdown shield Newcastle has equipped. Respawn explains that the item has historically been underused by players in Apex Legends, but Newcastle should make it a more valuable tool for teams to pick up.

So far, Newcastle seems to be an especially exciting addition to the game’s roster. His defensive capabilities are unique, allowing him to protect teammates and rush into danger to save fallen comrades. Those gameplay features are all narratively motivated by the fact that he’s a dad who’s literally in the Apex games to protect his son. It’s the most clever fusion of story and mechanics that the game has introduced to date.

Apex Legends: Saviors launches on May 10 for all supported platforms. The season adds Newcastle to the roster and makes changes to the Storm Point map (which now has a dead lobster kaiju at the center of it). Apex Legends Mobile is also launching sometime this month.

Battlefield 2042’s new season adds a map set in the developer’s homeland

EA unveiled everything players can expect from Battlefield 2042 Season 3: Escalation ahead of its November 22 start date. The most notable addition is a brand new map called Spearhead, which is set in Sweden, the homeland of the Battlefield series' main developer, DICE.
Surprisingly, Spearhead is the first Battlefield map set in DICE's home country. The map is centered around two Nordvik manufacturing facilities in the Swedish wilderness, surrounded by very rocky and uneven landscapes. It looks like a map full of interesting terrain that will benefit some vehicles, like the brand-new EMKV90-TOR tank, more than others. Later in Season 3: Escalation, the Manifest map will be reworked to be less cluttered and more tightly designed, while a Breakaway rework will move the Oil Rig to a location much closer to where most action on the map takes place.

Of course, Season 3: Escalation is more than just a new map, battle pass, and some map reworks. A new assault Special named Rasheed Zain is an Egyptian soldier whose legs were amputated after a military accident and replaced with prosthetics. He wields an Airburst launcher and recharges his health very fast after getting a kill, making him great on the front lines of a fight.
The Rorsch MK-4 railgun, the NVK-S22 shotgun, NVK-P125 long-range pistol, the throwing knife, and vault weapons XM8 and A-91 spice things up on the weapons front. EA and DICE also teased that they'll finally start to rework Battlefield 2042's Specialist and Class systems toward the end of the season.
Battlefield 2042 Season 3: Escalation begins on November 22 across all platforms. The game will also be added to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate via EA Play on that date. Later, the PS5 version of Battlefield 2042 will be free to try between December 16 and December 23.

Evercore Heroes applies League of Legends’ formula to a cooperative game

Vela Games, an Irish game studio founded by former Riot Games developers in 2018, unveiled its first game at a digital prebrief event attended by Digital Trends. Titled Evercore Heroes, this game modifies themultiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) formula that League of Legends helped popularize into a competitive PvE dungeon-crawling experience.
While the basics of gameplay and isometric view of Evercore Heroes are very similar to a game like League of Legends, players aren't directly fighting each other. Instead, four teams of four compete against each other in a cooperative dungeon-crawling experience where players slowly level up their characters, charge the titular Evercore, and eventually win by taking down a large boss. MOBAs, both in terms of gameplay and their community, can be intimidating to get into, so co-founderounder Travis George hopes that the cooperative aspects of Evercore Heroes and other efforts by Vela Games will make this an approachable and friendly game to which platers return.
"We all know that games aren't always known as the friendliest places in the world -- and we're not going to change human behavior on the internet -- but what we can do is be really deliberate about the gameplay, the community, and even the technology choices we make to hopefully orient players to have a more positive experience online," George says. "Hopefully, that keeps them coming back."

So far, Vela Games has revealed eight playable heroes: Shade the assassin, the shield-wielding Fyn, Zari the archer, the creature with a community-voted design named Beko, the melee-focused boxer Blink, fire mage Cynder, tech medic Remy, and short-range healer Lotus. They each have distinct abilities, and most of them look like they could be League of Legends champions or Valorant agents, so Riot Games' influence can really be felt in the design. Definitely keep an eye on this one if you're a fan of Riot Games.
Evercore Heroes is currently in development for PC, and interested players can sign up for a player test that will run from October 13 until October 16.

Apex Legends’ newest character is a deadly sniper with an adorable bat pal

Ahead of the start of Apex Legends Season 14: Hunted on August 9, EA and Respawn Entertainment went into more detail about the new Legend coming to the game at the start of the season. Her name is Vantage, and she's shaping up to be a deadly sniper with an adorable bat companion.
Vantage's backstory, which we got to see a bit of in July, consists of her growing up alone with her mother on the ice planet of Pagos. Her mother is secretly an escaped prisoner, and when Vantage almost dies exploring an abandoned ship, her mother has to turn herself in so she can get medical help for her daughter. Following this, Vantage enters the Apex Games in order to spread awareness about her mother's capture and eventually free her one day.
Vantage's passive ability is called Spotter's Lens. With that, she can scan an enemy's Legend name, team size, range, and shield rarity from a distance. Her Tactical Ability is called Echo Relocation, and she can use it to send Echo to a spot on the map before jetpacking to it. Thankfully, Respawn developers confirmed that players can't kill Echo, so players don't have to worry about putting this cute companion in danger.Her Ultimate ability is called Sniper's Mark, and it's one of the most unique ones in the game. Vantage summons her custom sniper rifle with Sniper's Mark. It has five bullets, and if she hits an enemy with it, Vantage will highlight their squad for ten seconds. Damage from her sniper rifle and allies scales up with consecutive hits, and all the shots don't need to be made at once, so Vantage can be quite deadly if a player knows how to use her properly. Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Season 14: Hunted begins August 9.
