Apple Arcade reportedly supported by investments of more than $500 million

Apple Arcade, Apple’s video game subscription service, will reportedly be supported by investments worth over $500 million, revealing its importance to the company’s plans.

Apple is spending several million dollars on more than 100 games for Apple Arcade, sources told Financial Times, placing the budget to secure games for the service at more than $500 million. If the figure is accurate, it represents a fairly large commitment, especially when considering that the budget for the initial roster of shows for Apple TV Plus is $1 billion.

The Financial Times report also claimed that Apple is offering incentives to developers if they choose to release games as Apple Arcade exclusives.

All of the games offered in Apple Arcade will be exclusive to the mobile platform and will not be available on the Google Play Store, sources told 9to5Mac. The deal with developers are for “mobile exclusive” titles, so the games may also be eventually released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, just not on Android. Nor will Apple Arcade games be available on the App Store as separate downloads.

HSBC analysts, quoted by Financial Times, predict that Apple Arcade revenues will grow from $370 million in 2020, to $2.7 billion in 2022, and to $4.5 billion in 2024, when there will be 29 million subscribers paying $12.99 per month for the service. It remains unclear if Apple will be able to reach significant success with Apple Arcade, but the company definitely has the money to spend to boost the service.

Apple Arcade will offer subscribers a wide selection of games that may be downloaded and played on iOS, Mac, and Apple TV. It will launch this fall through the App Store, with titles such as The Pathless, Lego Brawls, Hot Lava, Oceanhorn 2, and Beyond a Steel Sky. The games will not require an internet connection, unless they come with online multiplayer modes, and they may be shared between multiple devices through Apple’s Family Sharing feature.

The subscription price for the service remains unknown.

Apple Arcade was announced last month in Apple’s “It’s Show Time” event, alongside Apple News Plus that provides access to more than 300 magazines for $10 per month, a revamped Apple TV app, and the Apple TV Plus streaming service that will look to challenge Netflix.

Apple Arcade is kicking off 2023 by adding three new titles in January. Most notable among them is Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!, a mobile port of one of the Nintendo 3DS cult hits set to launch on January 20.

The original Pocket Card Jockey, released in 2013 in Japan and 2016 in North America, is one of the 3DS' oddest titles. Developed by Pokémon studio Game Freak, it's a horse-racing RPG that revolves around solitaire. Players raise and breed horses and then race them by playing fast-paced rounds of solitaire. It's an extremely bizarre concept, but an incredibly fun one that made it one of the handheld's most charming hidden gems.

The latest Marvel Snap update kicks off the Winterverse event, bringing many holiday-themed variants and brand-new cards to the mobile card game.
The two new cards coming to Marvel Snap this week are Darkhawk and Sentry. Darkhawk is a superhero who first emerged in the 1990s and has a techno-organic body with glider wings. In Marvel Snap, he's a 4-Cost, 1-Power Ongoing card that gives +2 Power for each card in the deck of your opponent.
Meanwhile, Sentry is a hero that was introduced in 2000 that has Superman-like abilities, but is connected to an evil entity called the Void that's just as powerful. In-game, that translates to Sentry being a 4-Cost On Reveal card with 8-Power that can't be played at the right location, as playing Sentry will cast a -8 power Void card there.

We don't know if Sentry and Darkhawk are Series 3, Series 4, or Series 5 cards yet. It will take some time for Marvel Snap's meta to evolve and really prove whether or not Darkhawk and Sentry are all that useful, but they do both have interesting abilities. Regardless, keep an eye out for them in Collector's Reserves and in the Token Shop.
They're not the only part of the Winterverse event, though. From December 20 until January 2, Second Dinner is giving away in-game awards for logging in each day. These range from 100 credits to a special Nick Fury card variant featuring Samuel L. Jackson's signature. Five new winter-themed card variants will also start to show up in the shop and Collector's Reserves. You can now find Winterverse cards for Abomination, Ebony Maw, Patriot, Rockslide, and Rogue.
A Winterverse bundle that includes a Sunspot Winterverse Variant, Avatar, 2000 Collector's Tokens, 8000 credits, 100 Sunspot Boosters, and a "Tacos After This?" title will be added to the shop in the coming days as well.
