‘Assassin’s Creed Origins’ will soon offer New Game+ mode

Assassin’s Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones DLC - Story Expansion | Launch Trailer | Ubisoft [US]
Last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins doubled down on the series’ role-playing elements with a new leveling system as well as a major overhaul to combat, and another change coming in the future will give dedicated players more options with their carefully customized characters: A New Game+ mode.

The news was shared by Ubisoft community manager Dominik Voigt on the game’s Reddit page. Voigt didn’t give a timetable for when the feature would be added, but said more information would be available “soon.”

New Game+ is common in open-ended games, giving players the ability to restart the story while retaining their weapons and abilities from a previous save file. It hasn’t been a staple of past Assassin’s Creed games, which typically tied certain pieces of gear or abilities to key moments in the story. Assassin’s Creed Origins, however, uses a looser structure often centered on side missions and improving protagonist Bayek’s level before moving forward in the story, so it seems like the perfect fit.

It isn’t just role-playing fans who are getting content made for them in Assassin’s Creed, however. On February 20, a free update will add “Discovery Mode,” which removes all combat and allows players to explore ancient Egypt and learn about its history. The mode allows you to pick a character from history as they’re guided on a museum-like tour, and it includes real-world images and additional text to give players more information on what they’re seeing.

Assassin’s Creed Origins‘ first expansion, The Hidden Ones, was made available on January 23, and it has received good reviews from critics and fans alike — though it has been criticized by some for being too close to the original game.

The second expansion, also included as part of the season pass, is The Curse of the Pharaohs. In contrast to the (mostly) realistic tone of the main game, the expansion will focus on Egyptian mythology and will have Bayek battle against “undead pharaohs and famed Egyptian monsters,” which we got a taste of during a drug trip sequence in the campaign. It will be available this March.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Ubisoft responds to Assassin’s Creed Shadows online backlash
The two heroes of Assassin's Creed Shadows stand side by side.

Ubisoft is addressing backlash it's received from players about one of Assassin's Creed Shadows' main characters with a lengthy statement concerning how it handles history.

The studio released the statement on X (formerly Twitter) and on its website, saying that it's received criticism from a lot of areas, including Japanese players who leveled accusations at the developer for skewing history with Yasuke, a legendary African samurai who's one of the game's two main playable characters, the other being the Japanese shinobi Naoe. In response, Ubisoft stated that its Assassin's Creed games are primarily historical fiction made with the help of historians, other experts, and in-depth research.

All Assassin’s Creed games in order, by release date and chronologically
The main character of Assassin's Creed: Mirage perches on a ledge and looks out over the city of Baghdad.

After a humble beginning in 2007, Assassin's Creed has become not only one of Ubisoft's most successful franchises but one of the biggest in gaming as a whole. Originally meant to be a new Prince of Persia game, the series was instead allowed to be a new IP that focused on a secret order of assassins in a centuries-long conflict with the Knights Templar.

What made the series so appealing was the setup. Through the use of a fictional machine called the Animus, people could relive the memories of their ancestors to learn secrets from the past to help in the present. That opened up endless possibilities for places and time periods the series could go. With over a dozen games in the series and counting, we've been all across history at this point.

July’s Xbox Game Pass lineup is the best the service has offered in months
Key art for Neon White

Microsoft unveiled the batch of eight games that will come to the Xbox Game Pass subscription service over the course of the first half of July. It's a solid lineup featuring quite a few amazing indie games. In particular, Neon White is a standout because it's one of my favorite indie games of the 2020s, and it's finally coming to Xbox while launching straight into Microsoft's subscription service.

Neon White initially launched on other platforms in 2022 and was developed by Angel Matrix, a studio founded by Donut County's Ben Esposito. It's a first-person shooter but doesn't play like Doom or Call of Duty. Instead, players must play cards in order to use their weapons, which double as both attacks and platforming assists. That means Neon White ends up being more like a speedrunning-focused puzzle platformer rather than a traditional first-person shooter.
