The next Assassin’s Creed game has been teased ahead of fall reveal

During the Assassin’s Creed 15th Anniversary Celebration livestream, Ubisoft announced that the next entry in the history-hopping series would be revealed during a special event coming in September.

Assassin’s Creed: 15th Anniversary Kickoff

The Assassin’s Creed series has been running since 2007’s original, and was an annual release from 2009’s Assassin’s Creed 2 all the way up until Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate in 2015. The next entry, Origins, would mark not only a change in the series’ release cadence to every two years, but also  a change in structure, with many more RPG elements incorporated into the core gameplay.

Ubisoft made a number of announcements regarding the series, the biggest of which is that the new title will be revealed this year. No specific date for the event was given, nor were there any details on the title or setting of this new installment.

It has been reported that whatever this next Assassin’s Creed game ends up being, it began life as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. These reports suggest that the series may forgo the massive open worlds of the prior games and present a more focused experience that brings emphasis back on the stealth and assassination mechanics. This could line up with reports that another known Assassin’s Creed project, Assassin’s Creed Infinity, is not ready for release in 2022.

Despite the somewhat large jump from the gameplay formula from Syndicate to Origins, the series has never been more successful, which many believe is mostly due to the longer gap between releases, although complaints about the ballooning size of the worlds have become more prevalent. If this next entry is indeed an upgrade to content originally planned as DLC, it may be a more palatable experience overall.

Can’t wait for Assassin’s Creed Shadows? Play these games instead

Ubisoft unveiled Assassin's Creed Shadows last week, giving us our first real glimpse at the first Assassin's Creed game to be set in Japan. Its Feudal Japan setting is something that fans of Assassin's Creed have craved for a long time, and while it's awesome that Ubisoft is finally delivering that concept, some other games did beat it to the punch. Many other developers have noticed how fruitful a historical Japan setting can be, from its feudal era all the way until the West started to intervene in the Edo period. As a result, there are quite a few games that I can recommend you check out while you're waiting for Assassin's Creed Shadows' November 15 launch.

The five games I'm recommending all range in size. Three of them are AAA action games, all set in different eras of Japanese history that immerse players in different ways. Meanwhile, the other two games I'm spotlighting are more experimental titles that, while not directly comparable to Assassin's Creed Shadows from a gameplay perspective, are still well worth your time if Japanese history and culture intrigue you.

Despite fan concerns that the recently announced Assassin's Creed Shadows would be online-only, Ubisoft has confirmed that this won't be the case.

The Assassin's Creed team posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to clarify that the game would only need an online connection to install, and then can be played completely offline after.

Ubisoft's biggest upcoming game is arguably Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is set to release on November 15 across all the usual platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That also seems to include some unusual ones, too, including Mac.

While the official store page only mentions that the game will be available digitally on PC, a press release sent to Digital Trends features a few more details, including that the standard edition will release on Macs with Apple silicon on day one via the Mac App Store. However, players won't be able to buy more premium editions for the platform.
