Overwatch. But you’ll now be able to play it without spending a dime, as it is effectively going free-to-play.

The “Battleborn free trial” isn’t really a trial at all. All players can now get access to the game’s entire collection of maps and modes for free. There’s no time limit — the program is now available on consoles and PC, so you can go play it right now.

As of now, there are four different modes in Battleborn, with a fifth, “Supercharge,” arriving on June 22. Like the others, it will be completely free.

Similarly to other free-to-play games like Killer Instinct, free trial players will be limited to just a few characters. Six will be available at any given time, and they’ll be rotated out each week to make way for new ones. If you find that there’s a certain character you like, you still don’t necessarily have to pay cash, as they’ll be available through in-game currency. For those who want them immediately, they can also be purchased with real money, and a season pass is available to unlock the last four characters.

The Battleborn free trial will not give players access to the game’s story missions. These can be purchased separately through the game’s marketplace, as can additional customization options for heroes. The full game is also available through digital storefronts, but it’s still being sold for $30. We highly recommend checking out your local stores for a physical copy, as they’re readily available for a fraction of that price. Those who already own particular pieces of content when they purchase the full game will be awarded bonus credits. Battleborn players who started the game prior to June 6 will also be rewarded with addition credits, skins, loot packs, and cosmetic “flair” items.

This free Nintendo Switch game is messy, but endearingly weird
Denpa Men run around a town in The New Denpa Men.

The Nintendo Switch just got a new free-to-play exclusive, and it's a big deal for a very niche but dedicated fanbase. The New Denpa Men is the latest entry in developer Genius Sonority's Denpa Men series. If you haven't heard of that before, there's good reason. The series debuted on Nintendo 3DS and has had several entries since, spanning out to mobile, but its most recent installments were exclusive to Japan. The Switch release brings the quirky RPG back west, which marks an exciting return for its cult following.

Or it should have been exciting, at least. As it stands, The New Denpa Men is a bit of a mess at launch. A laughable English localization, a frustrating online requirement, and some pesky microtransactions already have fans torn. While those are all issues that have bugged me during my first few hours with the release, I'm still finding some endearingly weird charm in the RPG. It feels like a return to a different era of Nintendo, where the company's hardware gimmicks led to some welcome creative swings.

Splitgate 2 evolves the hit portal shooter with factions and time powers

Breakout multiplayer hit Splitgate is returning from the grave. 1047 Games announced Splitgate 2 on Thursday, and it's scheduled for a 2025 release. The sequel has been rebuilt from the ground up to feature new faction-based portal gameplay.

Splitgate became a surprise hit in 2021 after initially hitting early access in 2019, combining Halo-esque first-person gunplay with portals, creating a unique dynamic that focuses more on positioning rather than aiming or your skill with a virtual gun. It amassed over 600,000 downloads in its first week, and around 22 million over its lifetime. In 2022, the studio announced it was winding down support to focus on a new project that wasn't exactly "Halo meets Portal."
