Battlefield 4 brings back all of the multiplayer modes that fans are expecting – Conquest and Rush, of course, along with Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, and Domination – but there are two new game modes as well, revealed and detailed in the latest post on the series’ official blog. The two newcomers are “Obliteration” and “Defuse”; developer DICE refers to the former as a “Battlefield Moments Generator” whereas the latter will likely be familiar to fans of a certain other wildly popular multiplayer shooter series.

In Obliteration, two teams of 12 (16 on PC and next-gen consoles) face off in a race to collect a bomb that spawns in a random location and plant it at one of the three objective locations belonging to the enemy team. You’ve got to fight your way to the bomb, get it to the objective, plant it, and destroy the target. Once a bomb detonates, a new one spawns. The first team to draw the oppositions three objective locations is the winner.

Defuse, on the other hand, is a near-carbon copy of Call of Duty’s “Search & Destroy” mode. Designed for 5v5 match-ups, one team defends a target location – said to be similar to Rush mode’s M-COM locations – while the other attempts to plant a bomb and destroy said target. The twist is that there are no respawns in this mode and medics can only revive allies once per round. Those that are eliminated before a round ends are kicked into spectator mode until the next round. Like we said, it’s Search & Destroy.

Battlefield 4 heads off to make war with the holiday season lineup on October 29, 2013 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arrive in the following month on each next-gen console’s launch day: November 15 and November 22, respectively.
