Just a day after rumors surfaced that developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games have a sequel to the long-awaited post-apocolyptic cult hit Borderlands in the works, the companies officially announce Borderlands 2 with the launch of a new website.

News of Borderlands 2 surfaced late Tuesday after Eurogamer caught word from an unnamed source that 2K Games would soon announce the title. When asked to comment on the leak, Gearbox President and CEO Randy Pitchford said this:

“I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox LOVES Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it’s gotten from our customers and the fact that it’s sold over four million units now… But we’ve only only announced what we’ve announced. If we haven’t announced it, it doesn’t exist.”

Pitchford goes on to explain that “plans and efforts toward the future always exist,” but that “brainstorming and blue sky research and development should never be allowed to be construed into a customer promise.”

In other words, Pitchford is basically saying, “yes, we are making Borderlands 2, but I’m not going to break from our marketing plan and announce the game early just because you got a leak, Eurogamer.”

Pitchford later took to Twitter and called Eurogamer‘s report “shoddy journalism,” even though everything they reported was 100 percent accurate.

Part of Pitchford’s vitriol toward Eurogamer is the fact that Game Informer Magazine received a “worldwide exclusive cover story” about Borderlands 2 which, according to the press release, reveals many game details,” like “several new character classes” that will be included in the game.

Borderlands 2, an action adventure first-person-shooter, will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. 2K Games plans to release the game during the 2013 fiscal calendar year of Take-Two Interactive, which actually starts on April 1, 2012. Customers can pre-order the game as of now.

The long-gestating Borderlands movie is now out in theaters. You can go see it this weekend, or, if reviews are any indication, you might want to stay home and play some Borderlands games instead. And right now you can get the whole series at a deep discount on just about every platform.

The easiest way to build out your Borderlands collection is through Borderlands Collection: Pandora's Box, a bundle that consists of Borderlands 1, 2, and 3, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales from the Borderlands, and New Tales from the Borderlands, along with each game's DLC. The collection is normally $150, but you can get it now for $37.49 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Steam. It even came to Nintendo Switch this week, and is available for the same price. All deals appear to expire on August 15. You can't get this bundle on the Epic Games Store, but the platform is also holding a franchise sale.
