If you aren’t yet tired of Borderlands and its lore, then we have good news for you. According to a report from online retailer GamePointsNow, 2K Australia is said to be working on a game called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
Reportedly set on the moon of Pandora, the alien planet setting of the first two games, Pre-Sequel features four new, but familiar, playable characters: Athena the Gladiator, Wilhelm the Enforcer, Nisha the Lawbringer, and Fragtrap. Three of these characters have origins elsewhere in the Borderlands universe: Athena appeared in the Borderlands DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx; Wilhelm was a giant robot boss in Borderlands 2; and Fragtrap seems to be a combat-modified Claptrap robot. Nisha is an unknown, though GamePointsNow suggests that the character bears a resemblance to Borderlands 2‘s Sheriff of Lynchwood.
According to the report, the story revolves around completing missions for a younger Handsome Jack while he looks for a missing artifact. The search takes you to Pandora’s moon of Elpis, a low-gravity environment where you can use jetpacks to travel quickly. However, since we’re now in space, oxygen will be a concern; you’ll need to pick up “OX-kits” in order to maintain oxygen levels. The game will also feature the series trademark focus on billions of guns, with two new types added in: laser weapons and cryo weapons.
GamePointsNow reports that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be released sometime in 2014 for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. This report comes shortly after Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford commented on Twitter that the studio is working on something for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, though he made no mention of what exactly that project is.
We’ve reached out to 2K for comment and will update this post accordingly if/when we hear back.
