Call of Duty: Black Ops – Annihilation map pack gets PS3 and PC release date

Call of Duty-loving PlayStation 3 and PC gamers: this is the public service announcement you’ve been waiting for. The Annihilation map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is easily the best of the bunch released so far, has an official release date now for non-Xbox 360 platforms. It’s soon too: July 28 for both PS3 and PC, which is less than two weeks away.

Woo hoo!

Annihilation adds four new multiplayer maps and one new zombie map to the Treyarch-developed first-person shooter. On the multiplayer side you’ve got: Drive-In, a small map set in a dilapidated ’50s-style drive-in movie theater, Hangar 18, an outdoor location at Area 51 (complete with alien autopsy room and a weird, floating apple), Hazard, a massive, sniper-loving map that is actually a remake of the World at War location Cliffside, and Silo, set just outside a Russian missile launch facility in an area littered with construction materials (read: cover).

As for the zombies offering, the new map is called Shangri-La. It’s the smallest of the zombie maps available for Black Ops, set around an ancient jungle temple. There are all sorts of progress-hindering traps as well as water spouts, a water slide and a mine cart you can use for quick travel. If you’re a fan of Treyarch’s zombies mode, this is the strongest one so far, perfectly designed for groups of three or four. The expected easter egg is also an epic one, and you PS3/PC players have the added bonus of not having to wait for the community to figure out how to solve it.

In short, more Call of Duty is coming, and it’s rather awesome Call of Duty. Mark your calendars now.

Well, the game's latest iteration is already a smash hit and a lot of fun, and if you want to pick it up for Xbox or PlayStation, Walmart has it discounted down to $55 from $70, which is great for a newly released game. That said, you better hurry and pick it up if you like it because we've already seen many Black Friday deals expire. It's also better not to wait for any Cyber Monday deals since we aren't sure if we'll even see a deal on Modern Warfare II, let alone one as good as this.

Why you should buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
There are generally two ways to enjoy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II: online multiplayer or the campaign. First, let's start with multiplayer, a significant improvement on the last entry into the series, with several new modes and excellent gunplay. There's also a lot of customization in guns, allowing a lot of fine-tuning that's new to the franchise, and since we want to start you off with an advantage, we've ranked every gun on Modern Warfare II. That's not the only new thing there, with some great new and upgraded Killstreaks and Perks for you to play around with. That said, the maps sometimes feel cluttered due to having tons of entry points, and a large number of alleyways and small places to navigate create many sightlines that are hard to keep up with.

Crossplay has become an almost universal feature for multiplayer-focused titles. The Call of Duty franchise remains one of the biggest multiplayer titles in the world, and has been supporting crossplay for multiple entries now, so it came as no surprise that this year's Modern Warfare II would also allow players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC to compete with or against one another. However, with the game's full release, Xbox and PC users have discovered that they are unable to choose not to be matched up with players on other platforms.
