This year’s Call of Duty will be called ‘Infinite Warfare’

The next entry in the Call of Duty series may be called Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, based on a listing that appeared on the trending section of the PlayStation Store Thursday. Though the listing is no longer present, a PS4 user posted a screenshot of it on Reddit. Kotaku also reported that it found the name online as well before it had been taken down.

Meanwhile, journalist Jim Sterling tweeted information from a retailer suggesting that Actvision plans to announce the next Call of Duty on May 3. The paper did not corroborate the name, and referred to the upcoming news as “Call of Duty reveal.” Activision previously said it would unveil the game at E3 this June.

Based on Activision’s developer cycle, the 2016 entry of Call of Duty is expected to be the next entry in the “Warfare” sub-franchise from developer Infinity Ward. The studio’s last game was the 2013 entry in the series, Call of Duty: Ghosts. Though Call of Duty, as a series, traditionally leans heavily on sequels, many fans and pundits wondered whether Activision would make a sequel to Ghosts, which was widely considered a low point for the franchise.

That said, this may be the start of a new CoD sub-brand. Rumors from early this year suggested the next Call of Duty will be completely abandon the modern setting in favor of science fiction. According to a rumor posted on NeoGAF and reportedly verified by Eurogamer, the new game will based in the “very far future,” feature space combat, and “warring sci-fi groups.”

There are a lot of shaky pieces here, but luckily we won’t have to wait long to see whether or not these rumors will pan out. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more Call of Duty news in early May. If it doesn’t come, E3 is just around the corner.
