Cyberpunk 2077 will dwarf The Witcher 3, according to developer

Cyberpunk 2077
Among the many reasons that The Witcher 3 was widely praised when it released earlier this year was its massive scope. With “open world” games in ascendance, The Witcher 3 confidently bestrode the globe like the colossus it was and is, with its landmass clocking in at over 35 times larger than the more linear The Witcher 2, and 20 percent larger than the standard gaming world measuring stick, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. And apparently the developer’s next project, the sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077, will be even bigger.

CD Projekt Red visual effects artist Jose Teixeira told MCV that “Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before. Far, far bigger. We’re really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.”

The learning experience of creating The Witcher 3, which was the studio’s first attempt at a truly open world, has directly informed and greatly focused its ability to create the world of Cyberpunk 2077.

“The Witcher helped Cyberpunk quite a bit, because the game got so big and so complex that it really taught us,” Teixeira explained. “We really didn’t know what was going to happen. If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience. Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a dystopian future not unlike that in the Deus Ex series, where human augmentation has spread rapidly and has destabilized many elements of society. It is based on Mike Pondsmith’s pen-and-paper RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, which was first published in the late 80s. After nearly a decade of swords and sorcery in the world of The Witcher, the developers are probably eager for the change of pace to Cyberpunk’s near-future science fiction.

The best Cyberpunk 2077 mods
A hacker uses a computer in Cyberpunk 2077.

Whenever a game is released on PC, you can always count on the community to do what the developers won't (or in most cases can't) and mod it in every way imaginable. This goes for good games but is especially important for games that came out in a state most wouldn't consider acceptable. For a game like Cyberpunk 2077, which has now become synonymous with terms like "rushed," "lazy," and "disaster," to name a few, mods might be your best chance at enjoying the game at all as the developers struggle to fix their game years after release.

With so many things to address, many people have attempted to make mods fixing, adding to, and improving Cyberpunk 2077. With so much to go through, it can be hard to know which mods are worth trying out to make your game run better or even just to add some fun new features to it. We've checked out all the mods we could find, ranging from performance to pure fun, so you can hack in and finally get that true cyberpunk experience you want out of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Steam success is great, but we can’t rewrite its history
Jackie from Cyberpunk 2077 with a gun pointed at his head.

Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a huge resurgence as of late, thanks largely to the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Netflix's new and critically acclaimed anime adaptation of the sci-fi property. According to the global PR director at CD Projekt Red on Twitter, viewers watched 14,880,000 hours of the show in just the first week, putting it safely in Netflix’s top 10.

This has been a great boon for the game, which launched in a poor, unfinished state at the end of 2020, and has been getting gradual updates ever since to make it playable, improve on features like skill trees, and add new ones like wardrobe transmogrification. While it sold well at the start of its life cycle, there hasn’t been a spike in the number of players since then. At the time of this writing, however, Cyberpunk 2077 is the eighth most played game on Steam, according to SteamDB, and has nearly 100,000 concurrent players, although it peaked at 1 million players.
