Cyberpunk 2077 resurges with 1 million daily players this week

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is being played by 1 million people every day this week, marking a sudden rebound since its launch in December 2020.

The Warsaw-based company expressed its enthusiasm for the whopping statistic in a September 21 tweet, thanking new and returning players for playing the game, which encountered controversy for being released with countless bugs nearly two years ago. “Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning,” the tweet said. “We wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for being with us and playing the game. Thanks, Chooms!”

The announcement comes after the number of concurrent players for the Steam version of Cyberpunk 2077 peaked at 85,555 on Sunday, according to SteamDB (and quest director Paweł Sasko), which was more than double the 37,000 players that were reported last week and the highest it’s been since launch. The game is peaking at 75,547 concurrent players as of this writing.

The resurgence in Cyberpunk 2077′s popularity has been attributed to the recent Edgerunners update that came with the Version 1.6 patch, as well as the launch of the Netflix anime of the same name, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. CD Projekt Red produced the anime, which began streaming on September 13, alongside Kill la Kill and Promare studio Trigger.

The 1 million daily player milestone also comes two weeks after the announcement of the game’s Phantom Liberty DLC, which will continue the story of player-character V and Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand, along with a new cast of characters. The new expansion is set to release in 2023, but will not come to last-gen consoles.

Cyberpunk 2077 is as impressive as it is janky one year later
V looking very angry in Cyberpunk 2077.

I had the horrifying realization recently that CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 was released a year ago. I've gone through a full 12 months of writing about the game, its various updates, and almost incomprehensibly, even more content delays. And while a year passing by in what was seemingly the blink of an eye is horrifying, only one thing really trumps that notion: Playing Cyberpunk 2077 a year out from launch.

I reviewed Cyberpunk 2077 when it was released in 2020 and admittedly had a better time than a majority of players would have once the game was widely available. Sure, I noticed some weird bugs and glitches while I was playing. I remember cars grinding themselves against concrete barriers and enemies T-posing randomly, as well as characters that wouldn't show up during calls and animations that were regularly out of whack.

All Cyberpunk 2077 updates and free DLC delayed to 2022

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red quietly announced today that the game wouldn't be receiving anymore updates, or anymore of its long-promised free DLC, until next year. The announcement comes just a week after the company announced that next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt were also delayed to 2022.

The announcement was made through a subtle change to a news post on the game's website. The header image for the post previously listed other updates for the game, as well as its free DLC, as arriving later this year. However, both have now been tacked on to the latter part of the image, showing that they're scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2022, along with Cyberpunk 2077's free next-gen update.
