Dead Space may live on, but Visceral is working on a different ‘passion’ project

Dead Space 3 ReviewLately there’s been some doubt about the future of the Dead Space franchise, but Electronic Arts Games Label head Patrick Söderlund put those rumors to bed at E3 last week. The franchise is not cancelled, though Dead Space 4 is not currently in development either, he confirmed with Eurogamer. This leaves EA room to revisit Dead Space in the future without disappointing fans in the present.

“Will there be another Dead Space game? Who knows? Have we killed it? No, of course not. But right now [Visceral Games] is focused on something else that you and other gamers will be very happy with,” Söderlund said. “They’re working on something else very exciting. You have to think of it from that perspective. Is it better to put them on the fourth version of a game they’ve done three previous versions of before? Or is it better to put them on something new that they want to build, that they have passion for?”

He said the utmost priority for EA is putting the best possible games in the hands of its fans, and that money and other factors come second to that. Considering EA’s reputation for nickel-and-diming, some might argue with that claim, but the statement stands.

Rumors of Dead Space‘s demise followed Dead Space 3‘s failure to reach EA’s hoped-for 5 million sales mark. Söderlund’s assertions that the franchise isn’t dead are likely accurate, though at the very least it seems the franchise is in an EA-induced coma for now. Regardless, it’s nice to see that EA isn’t going to beat Dead Space into the ground by releasing game after game until everyone’s sick of it.

Crawford shoots enemies with a turret he place in Battlefield 2042.

EA Motive, the studio behind 2023's excellent Dead Space remake, confirmed that the next Battlefield game is in development and that it will assist with its development. Unfortunately, work on that new game also means that seasonal updates for Battlefield 2042 will cease after the conclusion of Season 7: Turning Point.

These announcements were made across two separate blog posts. The one about EA Motive explains that "a group of developers from Motive are joining the talented teams at Criterion, DICE, and Ripple Effect to continue unlocking the full potential of Battlefield." Dead Space remake creative director Roman Compos-Oriola and executive producer Philippe Ducharme were named as the leaders of this team.

The Sims 4: For Rent expansion pack pits landlords against tenants
A shot of a Sims 4 building that shows a Sims home broken up into different rental properties.

The Sims 4: City Living, one of the game's many expansion packs, first introduced livable apartments in 2016. For longtime Sims players, this was a welcome addition to the most recent iteration of the long-running series. But since then, players have asked for far more freedom in both apartment gameplay (i.e., playing a Sims family that lives in an apartment) and building.

The Sims 4: For Rent expansion looks to step up and provide players with some long-requested features that haven’t been available before. In a preview event, lead producer Rebecca Doyle and lead designer Jessica Croft took press members through the expansion pack’s features, and even provided the opportunity to play as a property owner.
