Destiny’s ‘The Dawning’ holiday event is live now in ‘Destiny 2’

Destiny 2‘s holiday event, “The Dawning,” arrives on Tuesday, December 19, and it opens up all kinds of winter wonders, including snowball fights in social areas, snowball attacks in Strikes, and a number of new items and cosmetics to acquire for the next few weeks.

As in the original Destiny, The Dawning adds a coating of snow, ice, and decorations to social areas in Destiny 2, along with its various modes and item introductions. Although the snowball fights give the game a somewhat playful feel, that’s not to say that this event doesn’t introduce some more serious gameplay alternatives, too.

In the Tower and the Farm, you can dig up a snowball from the various piles of snow and tag your friends, but in Strikes, you can hit an enemy with a snowball to stun them and do surprising damage considering the consistency of your projectile. “Mayhem,” a seasonal Crucible mode, is back, as well, giving Guardians the option to fight it out with faster ability recharges for some frantic, snowy action.

It wouldn’t be the holidays without presents, of course. Take part in Mayhem Crucible matches or the augmented Strikes and you’ll be able to earn new loot. Completing certain milestones each week will reward you with a Dawning engram. There are also new consumables for everyone who plays the game during this time.

If you want a specific holiday item, you can buy one straight from Tess Everis (with real money). Her inventory will rotate new holiday items in and out every week. On “one week or another,” during The Dawning, you’ll also be able to buy a new thematic exotic ship, ghost, and emote, as well as a new set of seasonal armor.

Celebrating the idea of giving during this holiday season, The Dawning also lets you craft a special present for your favorite vendor. Grab a “Dawning Gift Schematic” in the Bazaar and then craft it using items from various locations, before giving it to a vendor or agent. You’ll then receive a gift in return, though Bungie is staying mum on what exactly that will be.

The Dawning runs through January 9. Destiny 2 is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Its Curse of Osiris expansion recently launched on all platforms.

Blizzard historically loves celebrating major holidays, seasons, and events within its games. The original Overwatch was always featuring special new modes and costumes tied to these events. Despite Overwatch 2 just launching in early October, it isn't missing out on the chance to bring back perhaps the most popular yearly event: Junkenstein's Revenge. You can play a fan-made Super Mario Bros. 5 in Mario Maker 2 right now

It's been a bit since we've had a brand-new 2D Mario title, but one fan has taken it upon himself to provide that to those pining for a new entry in the classic platformer franchise. After seven years of hard work, Twitter user Metroid Mike 64 has finished his unofficial Super Mario Bros. 5 using Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch -- and you can play through the entire thing right now.

Metroid Mike 64 shared the news with his followers on Sunday, pointing out that he's been working on the project since 2015 with the goal of creating "a classic Mario game that plays as if Nintendo created it themselves." This, he points out, means a complete lack of the kinds of masochistic and troll levels that are commonly seen in Mario Maker 2, instead providing players with something focused on nostalgia and old-school charm.

Why the Destiny 2 and Fortnite collab makes perfect sense for Bungie

Destiny 2 is collaborating with the Epic Games Store, including swapping some cosmetics with Fortnite and Fall Guys. This announcement leaked ahead of Bungie's Destiny 2 showcase on Tuesday, and the community reaction was mixed. After all, Destiny 2, Fortnite, and Fall Guys aren't similar games at all. But after seeing the collaborations in action, they make perfect sense. Destiny 2has seen a lot of changes over the past year, and although it's still a far cry from Fortnite or Fall Guys, trading cosmetics fits right into where Bungie, Epic Games, and Sony are heading.

A tale of two games
The new skins come on the heels of Destiny 2 launching on the Epic Games Store, where Bungie is offering its 30th Anniversary content pack for free for the first week. Bungie says the collaboration is a celebration of the new launch, with three new skins each in Fortnite, Destiny 2, and on September 13, Fall Guys. Nothing is changing with any of these games; they're just adding new cosmetics. Still, the community isn't taking it that way. The friction with the Fortnite and Destiny 2 collaboration centers around how different the games are. The only common thread they share is that they're both multiplayer shooters, but even then, the games are so different in style and structure that they can't be compared.
