We finally got another look at the Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion today via a new gameplay preview from Bungie. We learned more about the new Prismatic subclasses and other features coming to the expansion.

With the Prismatic subclass, players will be able to wield Light and Darkness powers. Each has a meter that fills up as players use that kind of attack. When both are filled, players enter a state called Transcendence, where players get a grenade ability unique to each class alongside other buffs.

Another new The Final Shape gameplay feature is Exotic class items that come with up to two special perks. Overall, many of The Final Shape’s new features are meant to give players the building blocks to discover a lot of wacky abilities and perk combinations. Destiny 2: The Final Shape Developer Gameplay Preview

Destiny 2: The Final Shape was first announced last May at the PlayStation Showcase. This expansion will serve as a culmination of sorts for Destiny 2’s story as players are finally confronting The Witness and a new enemy faction named the Dread in a place called The Pale Heart. Originally intended to be released earlier in 2024, Bungie delayed the expansion to June 4 amid layoffs at the studio last October. Now, this expansion, which is set to serve as a culmination of sorts for Destiny 2′s story as players are finally confronting The Witness, is almost here.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape will launch on June 4. In the meantime, players will also be able to try out new content added during the two-month Into the Light event currently running.

Our most anticipated video games of 2024: Final Fantasy, Hellblade 2, and more

After a ruthlessly crowded year for video games, you’d think I’d be ready to slow down and take a breather. Unfortunately for me, the video game industry rests for no one. 2024 is right around the corner, and it’s already filling up with new game releases -- some of which threaten to be 100-hour affairs that could keep players occupied for an entire year.

While 2023’s big releases were set in stone before the year even began, 2024’s release calendar is more of a mystery. We know what’s coming in the first few months and have a vague idea of some games that’ll drop through the year, but it’s not quite clear what the big breakout releases or holiday system sellers will be yet. Instead, we’re sitting on a pile of high-profile RPGs, niche projects, and eye-catching indies. Any of those games could be topping year-end lists 12 months from now.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 is a grand finale and new beginning for VR gaming
A player battles a four-legged beast in Asgard's Wrath 2.

I still distinctly remember my first experience playing a video game in VR. I was working at Rolling Stone when HTC came to the office to demo several experiences on its Vive headset. After playing some basic arcade games, I commented that I could really feel that the tech was in its Atari era. The simple game design made it clear that this was just the beginning for VR gaming, and that I shouldn’t expect it to match console gaming anytime soon. It was an experimental ride I was ready to take.

Playing Asgard’s Wrath 2 on a Meta Quest 3 one decade later, it feels like I’ve jumped 30 years into the future. Though games like Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Half-Life Alyx have delivered similarly impressive adventures over the past few years, Meta’s big exclusive takes the tech to a new peak. If those early games I played in my first VR demo were analogous to Atari 2600 games, this enormous RPG sequel takes me all the way to the Xbox 360 era. That’s a quantum leap forward in just 10 years.

Destiny 2's next expansion, The Final Shape, has been delayed. The DLC will now launch on June 6, 2024. Prior to that date, the shooter will get a new two-month event dubbed Into the Light.

The news of The Final Shape's delay shouldn't come as a surprise. Just this month, developer Bungie was hit by a layoff wave that will reportedly cut around 100 staff members. At the time, Bloomberg reported that The Final Shape would be bumped to June. Bungie has now confirmed that report in a blog post.
