Dying Light: The Beast brings back Kyle Crane in a new open-world title

After a cryptic tease from host Geoff Keighley prior to the event, Techland showed up to Gamescom Opening Night Live to reveal the next entry in the open-world zombie franchise, Dying Light: The Beast. This will be a full, open-world sequel said to be around 20 hours in length.

Techland’s Dying Light franchise began in 2015 with the original title and its sequel in 2022. With how much DLC support that first game got, many expected the sequel would receive the same treatment; however, Dying Light: The Beast will be a standalone entry in the franchise.

The short trailer shows a group of soldiers walking through a shadowy forest in the dead of night. They are eventually picked off and attacked by someone, or something, kept out of our view. Despite their firepower, nothing the soldiers do can stop their attacker.

We then cut to Kyle Crane, the protagonist from the first Dying Light game and its expansions, looking out over a new location drenched in sunset. After being experimented on for more than 10 years, he’s free and on a quest for revenge in Castor Woods.

Gameplay appears to be a return to the first-person parkour roots the series is known for, but with a few hints at some new features. One clip shows Crane scrambling and leaping across walls, perhaps hinting at a possible beast form he can take. Melee combat is just as gory and visceral as ever, with guns likely being a rarity. A bow and arrow was also prominently featured for additional stealth options.

Dying Light: The Beast has no release date yet, but will be available on all platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Wishlisting are available on all platforms now.

SteamWorld Heist 2 makes an underappreciated classic even better

Back in 2015, developer Image & Form was thriving in the Nintendo 3DS era. Its game SteamWorld Dig had a breakthrough moment two years before, bringing new fans to its unique steampunk world. Rather than following that up with a quick and easy sequel, it would veer into left field with SteamWorld Heist. It wasn't another Dig Dug-like platformer, but a turn-based strategy game that played more like Worms. Though it may not be as popular as SteamWorld Dig and its sequel, it's a hidden gem that's been begging for a sequel.

That'll happen on August 8 with SteamWorld Heist 2. The sequel builds on the original's winning formula, while taking it to new heights. I got a sense of just how much bigger it is when sitting down for a demo at Summer Game Fest earlier this month. Imagine the jump in scope between the first two SteamWorld Dig games, and that's what you can expect from SteamWorld Heist 2.

Limited Run Games ran its annual showcase on Thursday, adding to its catalog of physical retro game releases for the next year. While many of the trailers were for already-announced titles, LRG managed to sneak in some big announcements, including the Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition, re-releases and remasters of some deep-cut retro games, and more.

The physical game publisher has also gotten into the world of broader video game publishing, with its Carbon Engine helping developers use emulation to port older games from in the pre-PlayStation 1 era over to modern platforms. It's also already released some projects this year, with Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked with Konami and being behind the Alan Wake 2 Collector's Edition.

The Plucky Squire is the Zelda: Link Between Worlds follow-up I’ve been craving

Of all the indie games set to release in the back half of 2024, The Plucky Squire has to be at the top of my list. I've been interested in the Devolver Digital-published project ever since its reveal thanks to its perspective-shifting gameplay. Players run through the pages of a storybook in 2D, but jump out of it to solve puzzles in the 3D world around it. It's one of those design hooks that immediately catches my eye, but I always have to stop and wonder if an idea like that will end up playing as a cute gimmick.

Thankfully, I'm not worried about that with The Plucky Squire. During a 45-minute preview at Summer Game Fest, I got a much better ideas of how much gas developer All Possible Future has in its tank to power its premise. The slice I played already teased an adventure full of surprises that should make it as charming as I'm hoping it'll be.
Off the page
My adventure begins a few hours into the full game in a truncated chapter with a few puzzles removed for the sake of time. During that time, I'd get to get a feel for both The Plucky Squire's 2D and 3D gameplay, and the way that those two ideas intersect. First, I'd start in the pages of a book. These sections play out like a standard top-down adventure where I control a little hero with a moveset not so far off from Link's. I can slash enemies, spin attack, and even perform a sword plant. In the first half of my demo, I'd chop down some enemies and find keys in some simple platforming puzzles.
