Dying Light: The Following trailer trades crumbling cityscape for countryside

Dying Light is not a short game. In our review we noted that the story missions alone took around 20 hours, and if you plan to do everything the game has to offer, that number can easily double. If after all that you’re still looking for more, developer Techland has got you covered with the upcoming expansion The Following.

Unlike Dying Light, which took place inside a single city, The Following heads into the country. This is far from a relaxing trip, as there are still zombies everywhere, along with new ways to deal with them, like new weapons and — even better — new fully drivable vehicles.

“An important part of this experience is commandeering all-terrain buggies and enjoying the game’s creative brutality and freedom of movement in high gear,” Techland told Videogamer. “But drivable vehicles are only one of many new features we’re preparing for The Following. We’re calling it an expansion pack and we take it seriously, so you can expect it to be jam-packed with new quests, mechanics, abilities, weapons, and challenges.”

As with the main game, upgrading your equipment plays a big part in Dying Light: The Following. Even your vehicle can be upgraded with a larger fuel tank, spikes, new paintjobs, and UV headlights. To make the most of the new vehicles, the expansion’s map is sprawling. It’s so big, in fact, that Techland can’t yet promise that the map will be compatible with the “Be the Zombie” multiplayer mode from Dying Light.

To date, Dying Light has sold over 5 million copies – more than Techland had hoped for. “To be honest, I think even we are a little surprised by the scope of our success,” Techland’s Tymon Smektala said. “So we knew that Dying Light is a good game, we know it’s going to be successful, but that successful? We are in the 10 best-selling games in the U.S. right now for the first half of the year, so tremendous success.”

The game was enough of a success that Techland is currently tossing ideas around for a sequel, which it is already saying could be too ambitious for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to handle. For now, the developer is still busy finishing up the expansion.

Dying Light: The Following will sell for $15, but will be free for those who picked up the season pass. No release date has been announced so far.

Dying Light 2 brings back zombie-killing mayhem — and humanity
A character looks down at a horde of the undead in Dying Light 2.

Here's a plain fact: Zombie games are very fun to play. Gunning down hordes of undead monsters is a simple pleasure to grasp. Whether it is Back 4 Blood or Dead Rising, we all take morbid joy in cracking some undead skulls. When a new zombie game comes out, we spend little time wondering if the combat will be fun, because nine out 10 times, it will be.

Dying Light 2 delayed again, will release in 2022’s busiest month
A sunset over the city in Dying Light 2.

Following the announcement of a December release date after an indefinite delay, Dying Light 2 has been pushed back once again. The zombie-parkour mashup from developer Techland is now set to release on February 4, 2022, placing it at the start of a month already packed with major releases.

In a post on Twitter, Techland said that "The game is complete and we are currently playtesting it." However, even in this state, the developer wants more time -- nearly two extra months -- to give the long-awaited game more polish. "It is by far the biggest and most ambitious project we've ever done," the post continues. "Unfortunately, we've realized for us to bring the game to the level we envision, we need more time to polish and optimize it." Dying Light 2 was originally set to release on December 7.
