EA is really going all-in on Star Wars

EA Star Wars: A Look Ahead
Need more Star Wars in your life? Electronic Arts has you covered for the foreseeable future.

As part of the EA Play press conference before E3, the presentation included a montage of virtually every studio under the publisher’s aegis around the world working on some Star Wars game or other. Jade Raymond, formerly of Ubisoft Montreal and now leading EA’s Motive Studios, helmed the affair. In addition to more content from extant EA Star Wars games (BattlefrontThe Old Republic, and Galaxy of Heroes), the presentation also heralded three new titles in the works

First, Raymond’s Motive Studios is working with DICE on Battlefront II, which will arrive in 2017. “We’re building on the foundation of the first game,” Raymond said on stage. “We’re listening to our players and adding more of what you want, including content from the new films.” Raymond’s extensive experience with the Assassin’s Creed franchise for Ubisoft hopefully points towards a robust single-player mode, which the previous game was sorely lacking. This is Motive’s first project since it was founded in 2015.

Then in 2018, Dead Space studio Visceral Games will release an action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe with an entirely original narrative and new characters. Former Uncharted scribe Amy Hennig is working on the project, with franchise help from Lucasfilm designer and artist Doug Chiang, who served as design director for Episodes I and II and created concept art for The Force Awakens.

Finally, Titanfall studio Respawn Entertainment is “exploring a different Star Wars era in their own third-person action-adventure games.” Details were scarce, though the Respawn section of the montage does include footage of a light saber motion capture session.

The video also features a brief glimpse of someone wearing a PlayStation VR headset, seated in what appears to be the cockpit of an X-Wing. EA announced earlier this year that Burnout studio Criterion Games is working with DICE on a PSVR-exclusive Battlefront mission, which is set to release later this year.

EA Play Live returns for an all-digital event next month
ea play live 2020

EA revealed its summer gaming event, EA Play, will return in 2020, but this time it will be presented entirely online. EA Play Live, as it's called this year, will kick off on June 11 at 7 p.m. ET, where it will be streamed on EA's website, Twitch, and YouTube.

EA says fans can expect "world premieres, news, and more," though it didn't add any more specifics. Still, it's safe to assume at least a few annual sports simulators will make appearances on the virtual stage, such as Madden NFL, NHL, and FIFA. Other projects in the works under EA's massive umbrella include a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, a second Star Wars game rumored to be code-named Project Maverick, and more sequels to two of its biggest franchises, Battlefield at DICE and Dragon Age at BioWare.

Star Wars fans have been getting plenty of new content recently, including the film The Rise of Skywalker and the game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and it looks like another project is coming soon. A PlayStation Store listing for Star Wars: Project Maverick has appeared in Europe, and it's reportedly a small-scale game.

The Twitter bot PSN posted an alert on March 4 that showed a basic title card for Project Maverick. That is likely not the game's final name, but it was integrated into the logo in such a way that it could be used in marketing.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — Hone Your Powers

Electronic Arts continued to generate strong profits over 2019, with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order selling well above the company's expectations and its live-service games generating impressive revenue. The success comes in spite of the early-year failure of Anthem, which was quickly discounted after receiving middling review scores and reports of the game being massively overhauled.
