EA Play Live 2020 event: Live news and announcements

Electronic Arts’ EA Play Live 2020 event is part of the Summer Game Fest, and it showed off a number of its biggest upcoming games. Star Wars: Squadron was announced ahead of the event, though the presentation had more in store for viewers than that.

Star Wars: Squadrons

A clip from Star Wars: Squadrons gives us a glimpse of explosive action within the upcoming Star Wars piloting game from EA. It looks to harness the nostalgic experience of Star Wars flight games. The game has online multiplayer, sports familiar characters, and offers crossplay in the style of many EA titles.

A Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay preview shows high-octane action and dogfights, as well as intense chases. Players can customize vehicles as well by adjusting various ship components. Players can also attack other ships strategically to compromise enemy spacecraft in particular ways, be it through firing at turrets or otherwise.

The game has multiple modes, including Dogfight, all of which require tactical maneuvering and skillful piloting while trying to wrench victory from the opposing team.

Star Wars: Squadrons comes October 2, 2020.

Full Steam ahead

Multiple games, including Titanfall 2, will head to Steam later this year. This comes after EA’s earlier decision to provide access to its games on Valve’s digital platform.

EA Sports return

EA’s sports titles will be getting their annual releases. This includes entries in the FIFA and Madden franchises, which will see updated graphics on the next-gen consoles this fall. The next installments will look more realistic than ever, with lifelike athletes and arenas for further immersion.

Apex Legends

The Lost Treasures collection event comes with season 5 of Apex Legends. With it comes Armed & Dangerous Evolved, which brings several improvements and additions. As with other events, it will bring a new cosmetic item. It will drop on June 23.

Two things are happening Apex Legends-wise this fall as well, including the addition of crossplay. A Switch version will also be dropping.

Lost in Random

In a dark land called Random, players take on the role of a little girl who travels with a friendly bipedal die as they battle randomness.

The game is graphically stylized and takes place in a cartoonish Victorian world. Random will come later this year and appears to be one of EA’s more eclectic offerings.

Rocket Arena

A third-person multiplayer Hero shooter, Rocket Arena has players using Heroes to blast rockets in several ways in a chaotic arena on current-gen consoles. Rocket Arena sports several colorful locales where players will duke it out using nothing but explosives.

Skate sticks the landing

A new Skate installment is coming. No details have been divulged, but it will surely compete with the other upcoming titles within the skateboarding genre, including a Tony Hawk remakes and Skater XL.

Knockout City parts ways with EA and goes free-to-play

Velan Studios unveiled season 5 of Knockout City today. Alongside that announcement, the developer also confirmed that it will take over publishing duties from EA and that Knockout City will go free-to-play with Season 6.
Knockout City season 5, which begins on March 1 and is titled Greatest Hits, is supposed to serve as a celebration of the first year of the game. While it won't add a new Brawl Pass, map, or ball, it will bring back Basketbrawl, Chain Reaction, and Superpowers! While Season 5 will be fairly low-key for Knockout City, some drastic changes are in store with Season 6.

When season 6 starts on June 1, 2022, the game will go free-to-play. Previously, Knockout City only had a free trial and required players to purchase the game after they hit level 25. It is also part of EA Play and was previously a PlayStation Plus title, but Velan Studios is now simplifying its availability and making it free-to-play to anyone across all platforms. Anyone who bought the game before this transition will get a season 6 loyalty bundle that includes exclusive cosmetics, 2,000 Holobux, and XP boosts. 
As part of this transition, Velan will take over publishing duties from Electronic Arts. Previously, Knockout City was part of its EA Originals program. Once this transition is complete, all major decisions and the future of Knockout City are solely in the indie developer's hands. 
Knockout City is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch, though players might want to wait until June 1, 2022, to try it.

Apex Legends Seer guide: How to play, abilities, and lore

Season 10 of Apex Legends brought a lot of changes to the game, the most notable being yet another playable character. This free-to-play battle royale game came out of nowhere when it launched in 2019 with no leadup, but the team behind Titanfall 2, Respawn, certainly knew what they were doing. They have always had a masterful grasp on how an FPS game should feel to play, but injected their own unique, and incredibly satisfying, movement mechanics to really up the action. It was never going to kill the big guys like Fortnite or Warzone, but it stands toe to toe with these powerhouses.

The 18th playable character to join the roster is Obi "Seer" Edolasim, who joined the game during the Emergence event of season 10. Seer fits somewhat into the tracker or recon archetype of character, but has very different uses than other legends that can fill that role. He's just as unique and dynamic as the rest of the roster, meaning it will take a bit of time to fully learn what he is, and isn't, capable of. Seer's strengths have only just begun to be recognized, so let's go over his lore, his abilities, and how best to use this stylish legend in combat in Apex Legends.

EA didn't show up at this year's E3, but that didn't stop the company from holding its own event. EA Play Live was essentially an E3-style press conference packed with news about EA's biggest titles. Much of the show was predictable. We knew we'd see Apex Legends' newest hero, and news about Battlefield 2042's new Portal mode leaked hours before the show. Plus, EA prepped us for what wouldn't appear during the showcase, including Skate 4.
