Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree story trailer follows Miquella into the Land of Shadow

ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree | Story Trailer

FromSoftware has finally (sort of) revealed the story players will be experiencing in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. As we learned in the reveal trailer, and from comments made by director Hidetaka Miyazaki, it will follow the story of Miquella of the Haligtree (referred to as Miquella the Kind in the trailer).

The trailer depicts the war that arose after Miquella attempted to create a new Erdtree to help cure his and his sister Malenia’s curses. Miquella “abandoned everything,” including his golden flesh and his fate, according to the trailer. At the end, we see a group of players going into the Land of Shadow to follow him. “Will you walk with us?” the narrator asks.

There are a few other questions that need to be answered as well. Why is Miquella shown as a young man when his curse trapped him in the body of a child? What you’ll be doing specifically is still unknown, but we can assume it involves finding Miquella in some way or following in his footsteps. Either way, you’re going into the Land of Shadow, a whole new map created for the expansion.

The demigod Miquella, who’s crucial to the story setting up the events of Elden Ring, hasn’t actually appeared alive in the game yet, and has only been seen as a statue and as a decrepit hand inside a cocoon. You also learn about him as you explore the world and defeat his sister, Malenia, in one of Elden Ring‘s toughest boss battles.

We expect there to be other trailers in the leadup to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s release on June 21, 2024. It’ll be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

How to find and use the Prayer Room Key in Shadow of the Erdtree
Multiple players look out over a landscape with the Elden Ring co-op mod.

Calling Shadow of the Erdtree a DLC is kind of misleading when you actually enter the Land of Shadow and see just how massive this new region is. The base game was already massive, and this feels like another game about half its size was plopped into the world, with bosses, weapons, dungeons, and secrets all included. Among all the hidden areas and items, the most mysterious include the Prayer Room and the Prayer Room Key. Players may stumble upon one or the other -- most likely neither -- but almost certainly not both without some help. If you're interested in the lore of the game in particular, you will want to see what's hidden behind this very secluded door.

Note: This article contains minor spoilers for bosses and NPCs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Elden Ring’s pre-Shadow of the Erdtree patch makes its final boss much easier
An Elden Ring player sits on their horse and looks out at a castle ahead.

Publisher Bandai Namco has released the patch notes for the big pre-Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree update, and while a lot of the changes were expected, it features some small but exciting additions.

The most noteworthy change in version 1.12, buried in the "New inventory features" section, is the new ability to summon your steed Torrent in the final boss battle. Without spoiling anything, not only does the final battle come right after another equally difficult boss, but you'll need to do a lot of sprinting to avoid its attacks. Being able to use your trusty steed will make this a lot easier. And, quite frankly, you'll need all the help you can get when it comes to most boss battles.

A furnace golem looms in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Elden Ring's first and only expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, brings a heap of new content to From Software's highly acclaimed open-world RPG. Not only is there an entirely new map to find and uncover, but players also receive a fresh story, tons of additional weapons and spells to use, and a variety of all-new bosses to take down along the way as they make their way to the end of the journey. It's quite a lot to explore, so it's understandable if you're curious about how long it'll take to see all of this new content. Your mileage will vary, naturally, but we've got estimates below regarding how long it'll take to beat Shadow of the Erdtree.
How long is Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?
It goes without saying that, due to the inherent difficulty of Elden Ring, your skill level within the game will play a significant role in the amount of hours you'll spend completing Shadow of the Erdtree. The average player just seeking to see the main story of this new expansion can expect to spend between 20 to 30 hours reaching its conclusion.

Those looking to take in everything Shadow of the Erdtree has to offer, however, will spend a lot more time with the DLC as they navigate the new map, checking every nook and cranny for new gear, spells, and well-hidden secrets. If that sounds up your alley, you can count on up to 50 hours of exploration and combat in the Land of Shadow.
