Isabelle joins SSBU roster, new Animal Crossing coming in 2019

The biggest news coming out of the September 2018 Nintendo Direct is the announcement of a new Animal Crossing scheduled for 2019. Nintendo toyed with us a bit, first showing Isabelle getting a letter where she’s asked to join the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. We got a preview of some gameplay showing off her moves which include shooting off confetti poppers, smacking opponents around with poms-poms, summoning a fire hydrant rocket, and floating around on a bench attached to two bunny-head shaped balloons.

Following that announcement, Tom Nook stole the show and Nintendo revealed the big news. There’s not much to go on right now but we do know that the new Animal Crossing will be coming out in 2019 and will most likely launch in the Fall/Winter if it follows the same pattern of previous titles in the series.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

The September 2018 Nintendo Direct kicked off with a mini trailer of Luigi’s Mansion 3. Gameplay included Luigi sneaking around what looks to be a hotel as he gets spooked by a haunted housekeeping cart, sucks up poltergeists with his famous ghost-sucking vacuum, and shoots off a plunger in a ghost’s face. Presently, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a working title coming in 2019 with no release date.

The original Luigi’s Mansion will be arriving to the Nintendo 3DS on October 12 with a new two-player mode that requires both people to own the game. One person will also get to play as a green, ghost-like version of Luigi. If only one person owns the game, friends can still partake in boss battles in the gallery using download play.

New features were shown for Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. We learned that Pikachu and Eevee will be able to learn Special Techniques that let them cut down trees, surf on water, and fly (exactly like the Hidden Machine moves in the Gamefreak games). They will also be able to learn powerful moves that only they can use in battle. Petting them in handheld mode will change their hairstyle depending on how you pet them.

This surprising new Metal Slug game is $10 well spent
Key art for Metal Slug Attack Reloaded.

The latest Nintendo Direct didn't have many surprise releases, but the one game that did come out immediately after the presentation caught my eye. Metal Slug Attack Reloaded from SNK recontextualizes the classic side-scrolling shooter series with gameplay more reminiscent of tower defense auto-battle games. Its roots go back to a 2016 mobile game called Metal Slug Attack; while that revelation might make you want to click off the page, you shouldn't because this game is surprisingly entertaining. Metal Slug Attack Reloaded is a textbook case of how you can take the core ideas and aesthetic of a classic, reinterpret it with a new style of gameplay, and still feel faithful to the franchise at large.

Metal Slug games are typically side-scrollers where players control soldiers blasting their way through stages with a variety of bombastic weapons. It's explosive, fairly fast-paced, and still quite fun today. I still have the Xbox 360 re-release of Metal Slug 3 downloaded on my Xbox Series X and boot it up whenever I'm in the mood for it. In comparison, Metal Slug Attack Reloaded is a slower-paced game that plays quite differently. The core conceit of every level is that players want to protect their own base while destroying their opponent's base. These bases are both attacked and defended by Units, which players customize decks of before a battle in order to determine what will be at their disposal.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD gives a 3DS classic the treatment it deserves
Luigi, scared, closes a door in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.

I got into Nintendo games during an era that's considered to be the company's weakest. In retrospect, the 3DS and Wii U era was poor for Nintendo, serving as a low point between the successes of the Wii and Switch. Despite that, this is when I went all-in on playing almost every new Nintendo game after getting both a 3DS and Wii U. And looking back, Nintendo was still putting out some great games during this era. One such title was Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, a sequel to a GameCube launch title that took the series to portables and added 3D. It was the flagship game in the now infamous "Year of Luigi" and positioned the series for success with Luigi's Mansion 3.

Ahead of an end-of-generation blowout for Switch, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is getting rereleased as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. I've been replaying the game on Switch over the past couple of weeks and comparing it to my time with the 3DS version. It's less robust of a refurbishment than the one Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door received last month, but if you skipped out on the 3DS era of Nintendo and never checked Dark Moon out, then Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is worth your attention -- especially now that it's no longer possible to easily get the original.
Bite-sized ghosts
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD follows Luigi as he recovers pieces of the Dark Moon that gave the 3DS game its namesake. The McGuffin kept ghosts calm, but that peace ended when King Boo shattered it. Professor E. Gadd recruits Luigi (somewhat against his will) to explore the mansion, capture ghosts with an upgraded Poltergust 5000, and recover pieces of the Dark Moon. While the original Luigi's Mansion was all set in one mansion, this sequel was designed for a handheld platform, so its structure is a lot more segmented.

These underrated 16-bit classics just got new life on Nintendo Switch
A still from the intro cinematic for Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked.

There is no shortage of all-time greats to choose from when seeking out a new 16-bit platformer to play. SNES and Sega Genesis classics like Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Mega Man X are probably the first things to come to mind. During that same era, Contra and Castlevania developer Konami released a series of platformers that rivaled those greats but didn't get as much recognition as they deserved. Now, these titles are getting a new lease on life thanks to a collection that launched earlier this month on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

I'm talking about Rocket Knight Adventures, a 1993 release on the Sega Genesis, as well as its follow-ups on Genesis and SNES, separate titles both named Sparkster. These 2D platformers put players in control of an opossum named Sparkster, who wears a suit of armor with a rocket strapped to its back. These games aren't as widely remembered as many of their peers but are well worth the time of any platformer fan, so they are definitely worth checking out now through Limited Run Games and Konami's Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked, which came out right in the middle of Summer Game Fest this year.
