So much for Three Houses: Fire Emblem gets fourth house as DLC

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - DLC Wave 4 Trailer - Nintendo Switch

Fire Emblem: Three Houses was the Digital Trends 2019 Game of the Year, and for very good reason. The turn-based role-playing game from Nintendo features a tremendous story and strategic combat, and as its name implies, there are three different houses to choose from in order to add replayability. Actually, there were three houses, as the game’s latest DLC pack is adding a secret fourth house.

Releasing as part of the game’s Expansion Pass on February 12, Fire Emblem: Three Houses — Cindered Shadows is a new side story that follows the previously secret Ashen Wolves house. It isn’t a full-fledged house filled with numerous characters like the other three, but it includes four students, as well as a new Abyss area to explore. The house itself is located underneath the Garreg Mach Monastery, which is where the other three houses are located. It’s also going to be the newest playable stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is also adding protagonist Byleth to the game.

You won’t be limited to using the new characters in just the new side content, either. Once you have progressed in the expansion’s story, you’ll be able to bring them up to the surface and use them in the rest of the game. Balthus is a brawler who can make use of claws to deliver damage up close, Hapi is a magic-wielding knight, Yuri deals damage with a sword, and Constance is a flying unit who also wields magic. Using them in tandem could make your fight above ground substantially easier.

You’ll be able to get Cindered Shadows as part of the Expansion Pass, which is available to purchase now for $25. It includes extra cosmetic items, challenges, units, quests, and even a sauna. The game has received free updates, too, adding more battle appearance options and raising the save slot cap from 5 to 25. This will let you try every combination of units you can think of as you battle through the game’s dark and emotional storyline.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is available now exclusively for Nintendo Switch. Only one version of the game is available, so you don’t need to buy multiple copies for the full content as you do with the Pokémon series.

Fire Emblem Engage takes the right cues from Nintendo’s mobile games
Alear clenches his fist while wearing a ring in Fire Emblem Engage.

Given how long the video game development process takes, sometimes we don’t see the full impact of a game’s innovation until years later. That’s something I immediately noticed when booting up Fire Emblem Engage, the latest installment of Nintendo’s long-running tactics series. After a few hours with it, I could see how the project was likely conceived as a direct reaction to 2017’s Fire Emblem Heroes, one of Nintendo’s biggest mobile hits. Though 2018’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses was a major critical success for the series, Heroes seems to be the title that’s shaping Fire Emblem’s future five years later.

The forgotten games of 2022: 7 sleeper hits worth returning to
Three Hopes characters on a stylized purple background.

These days, it's simply impossible to keep up with every great game that releases in a year. With such a mass of experiences to choose from, players have no choice but to curate. That means that every year is bound to produce what I've started calling "forgotten games." It's a term I use to describe sleeper hits that would have garnered attention in a less crowded year, but were simply lost among a sea of great titles.

"Forgotten games" tend to break my heart. Generally, they didn't do anything wrong -- save for maybe skimping on their marketing budgets. They're strong games, just ones that didn't generate conversation. Sometimes it's just that they weren't groundbreaking enough to break into "game of the year" discussions. They're not polarizing or controversial enough to generate discourse. These games simply aren't conversation pieces and that's a difficult place to be in during our social age, which makes them hard to prioritize.

When it comes to the video game industry, we're currently living in an age of speculation. Players are no longer satisfied just getting news on upcoming games by patiently waiting for announcements. Insiders and leakers have become a fundamental part of the game hype cycle in the social media age, fueling a need for unofficial scoops. When a gaming livestream gets announced, it's usually surrounded by tons of rumors, leaks, and predictions that set some high expectations. It's easy to get disappointed by something like Nintendo's September Direct when leaks from high-profile insiders wind up being a bust.

But what if I told you that you can become your own insider, especially when it comes to Nintendo Switch? Yes, you can create your own realistic predictions with ease rather than getting let down by enticing Reddit threads. All you have to do is follow Nintendo's development cycle patterns, which have become crystal clear following today's Direct showcase.
Five-year plan
The deeper we get into the Nintendo Switch's life cycle, the more clear patterns in Nintendo's release cadence are starting to show. If you look at the company's first-party 2022 release calendar, you might notice that it looks a little familiar. That's because a good half of it has been comprised of sequels to games that hit the console in 2017.
