Sony has auctioned off the very first of the 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 consoles that were released in late 2014 to celebrate two decades of the PlayStation brand. One very dedicated Japanese fan paid roughly $129,000, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The special edition consoles are adorned with a grey color scheme reminiscent of the company’s original console. Only a very limited run of 12,300 were produced globally, with each one individually numbered. The auctioned unit holds the distinction of being no. 00001, the first produced.
After 1,585 bids, the Yahoo-hosted auction closed on January 25 with a winning bid of ¥15,135,000 — roughly $129,000.
“We appreciate all who participated in the auction and are surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations,” a representative from Sony told WSJ.
Proceeds from the sale, plus a matching donation from Sony, will go to Save the Children Japan, an international charity that has done extensive work in Japan following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
