Free games you should download before they’re gone

PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold, or Amazon Prime subscribers can get their hands on a different set of free games each month. All three subscription services offer up two or more titles each month in addition to their other perks and features.

These deals are only available for a limited time, though, so gamers should download them while they’re still available.

PlayStation Plus

Sony’s Instant Game Collection has been the prime perk of PlayStation Plus since it launched in 2010. It currently offers up two PlayStation 4 titles each month.

These games aren’t permanent additions to their libraries, though. If players let their subscription lapse, the games are locked without renewal or buying the games separately.

Free Instant Game Collection PlayStation 4 games for May 2020:

  • Cities: Skyline — Free from May 5 until June 2
  • Farming Simulator 19 — Free from May 5 until June 2

Xbox Live Gold

Microsoft has been giving away titles via its Games With Gold program since 2013 and offers four games a month split between Xbox 360 and Xbox One. That’s an important distinction as Xbox 360 games redeemed via Games With Gold will be permanently added to your library while the Xbox One titles require an active subscription to be played.

Free Games With Gold Xbox 360 games for May 2020:

  • Sensible World of Soccer — Free until May 15
  • Overlord 2 — Free starting May 16 until May 31

Free Games With Gold Xbox One games for May 2020:

  • Knights of the Pen and Paper Bundle — Free until May 15
  • V-Rally 4 — Free until May 31
  • Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr — Free from May 16 until June 15

Twitch Prime

Twitch Prime, which is free to all Amazon Prime members, gives multiple PC games to users each month. These titles are all free to keep forever, so they’ll still be in your library even if your subscription is no longer current.

Twitch Prime also offers up a wide range of free cosmetics and in-game loot for a variety of titles.

Free Twitch Prime PC games for May 2020:

  • Snake Pass — Free until May 31
  • Urban Trial Playground — Free until May 31

You can get NBA 2K23 and more with PS Plus this June
Donovan Mitchell in NBA 2K23.

The three games that make up PlayStation Plus Essential's June lineup have been revealed. There are any major console exclusives or no releases included; instead, there's NBA 2K23, a Jurassic Park tie-in title, and an indie game inspired by classic samurai films.

NBA 2K23 needs little introduction, as it's the latest entry in 2K's long-running, annualized basketball video game series. This latest entry stands out from the ones that came before by deepening the controls an AI further, as well as adding a Jordan Challenge mode that chronicles Michael Jordan's career. Beware of some pretty intrusive microtransactions, though.
Also available this month is Jurassic World Evolution 2, a theme park management game that swaps out roller coasters and other festivities for dinosaur-related attractions. The management genre is a surprisingly great fit for the Jurassic Park IP, and this game even provides a bit of story context to fill in the gap between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion.
Finally, there's Trek to Yomi, a very cinematic indie game. It's stylized like a classic black-and-white samurai action movie, which makes sense as it's telling a revenge story about a pupil trying to avenge their dying master. If you didn't play this game through Game Pass, it's now available on a Sony subscription service as well.
This certainly isn't the most exciting game lineup, but it still provides a wide variety of gaming experiences. NBA 2K23, Jurassic World Evolution 2, and Trek to Yomi will be available through PlayStation Plus from June 6 until July 3. Make sure you download May's PS Plus games before then too.

One of the PS5’s most impressive exclusives leads next batch of PS Plus games
Rivet from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Sony revealed a large and varied batch of games coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium this month. Its headliners are Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a true PS5 exclusive that utilizes the system's technology for visually impressive and seamless rifts between areas and worlds, and Humanity, a quirky new puzzle game launching day one on PS Plus Extra.
Rift Apart is a must-play for PS5 owners, so it's a good thing that Sony has finally made the decision to add it to its subscription service. Some great indie titles like Rain World and Lake, as well as the full Tomb Raider and Dishonored series, will also be available on PS Plus after May 16.
On the classic games front, it's a PSP-dominated batch, with Logan's Shadow completing the Syphon Filter series' presence within the PlayStation Classics collection.
A lot of good games, including Marvel's Spider-Man, are leaving PlayStation Plus on May 15, so it's good to know that a lot of other interesting games will be hitting the service on the same day. I ditched my consoles and went to cloud gaming for a week – here’s how it went
A table holding a DualSense controller, a DualSense Backbone, a regular Backbone, and an Xbox Series X controller.

Game streaming has felt like the "next big thing" in gaming for the past decade. I recall trying out services like OnLive back in my college dorm room, playing the same 30-minute trials over and over again. Half the time the service never booted, and the half that it did was a lag-filled mess. Fast forward a couple of years and Sony acquires Gaikai to integrate into PlayStation Now (RIP), but left it largely ignored until Xbox began its push into streaming with its Xcloud initiative. With major tech giants like Google and Amazon failing to crack the game streaming code, Sony and Microsoft appear to be the only two capable of supporting this console-less method of play.

For all the fancy talk about new servers and top-of-the-line streaming technology, I've never been convinced that game streaming would be able to replace the tried and true local experience. After all, even under perfect internet conditions, the speed of light is only so fast. And assuming even most people will have perfect internet conditions itself is laughable. However, I wanted to put my money where my mouth was. How could I judge game streaming if I didn't actually give it a shot?
