The Game Awards 2021: Here’s the complete list of winners

The Game Awards 2021 were unlike any other games show we’ve seen yet. Some of this year’s biggest and most well-received games fought it out for Game of the Year, while others walked away with awards in specialized categories like Best Ongoing, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. At the end of the day, only one game could take home Game of the Year, and that game was It Takes Two, one of the year’s biggest indie darlings.

This year, Deathloop and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart led the field of nominees, but that only scratched the surface. Metroid Dread, It Takes Two, and Psychonauts 2 were just a few of the heavy hitters that battled for this year’s top awards. Halo Infinite kicked off the gold derby by taking home a player’s choice trophy (even though the game launched yesterday and wasn’t eligible for any other categories).

The show premiered on almost every social media platform, including Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and more. No one game swept the awards, which speaks to the diversity of gaming experiences that were available to players in 2021. Here is the full list of winners.

In the past few years, I've become the type of girl who looks forward to The Game Awards more than the Academy Awards. This year, however, is a little bit different. As host Geoff Keighley announced this year's nominees, I hoped to see Sonic Frontiers get a bit of recognition. While mixed reviews meant it was unlikely to compete for Game of the Year, it felt like a potential shoo-in for categories like Best Action/Adventure Game. Instead, Sonic's latest didn't earn any nominations, not even for its critically praised soundtrack.

While Sonic's lack of nominations makes sense considering its overall reception, it's indicative of a wider trend that tends to pop up at events like this. Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which came out in March to critical acclaim, only managed to nab a Best Family nomination. Like previous years, even Nintendo's most well-regarded games were tossed into that category -- even ones that were reviewed better than some of the titles competing for Game of the Year.

Samsung is expanding its Gaming Hub by adding the cloud-based streaming app to some 2021 smart TV models starting next week. The service itself is getting more enticing, as the app will soon support 4K cloud game streaming at 60 frames per second (fps) on select games via Nvidia GeForce Now.

Samsung Gaming Hub launched this summer on the company's line of 2022 smart TVs. At launch, the service allowed TV owners to stream games on their TV through cloud services like Xbox Game Pass and Amazon Luna. With its latest update, Samsung has made it clear that the service is only growing as it looks to retroactively put it in front of even more smart TV users.
