The Game Awards 2022: Here’s the complete list of nominees

The full list of nominees for the 2022 Game Awards is here and (as you might have predicted) both Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok scored big. Other big nominees included games like Horizon Forbidden West and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, while indie titles struggled to break through aside from Stray.

Hosted by Geoff Keighley, The Game Awards is the video game industry’s version of the Oscars. This year’s show will take place in-person at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 8. Like previous years, it’ll live broadcast on various channels like YouTube and Twitch. The show is known for delivering world premiere reveals for upcoming games, as well as giving out a slew of awards in a variety of categories.

This year’s nominations come as no surprise. Elden Ring could be poised to sweep, as it picked up seven nominations. It even got a few puzzling nominations in categories like Best Narrative. It’ll face a tough foe in God of War Ragnarok, though, which picked up 10 nominations itself. That number is higher largely due to its two nominations in the Best Performance category. The two will duke it out in key categories like Best Action/Adventure Game and Game of the Year.

While those two games lead the nomination field, they aren’t the only games that scored big. The coveted Game of the Year category also includes A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. All four of those games scored nominations in other categories across the board as well.

There’s little diversity when it comes to the rest of the field, especially when it comes to independent games. The critically acclaimed Immortality snagged three nominations away from big budget games, but independent titles largely lost out to behemoths like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Gran Turismo 7.

Vampire Survivors changed the way I think about games in 2022

Due to the nature of my job, my gaming habits are a little unusual. I tend to chew through long games in short bursts for review purposes and spend the time in-between sampling as many smaller titles as I can. I’m the kind of person who wants to see everything gaming has to offer, and I strive to get my hands on an array of unique experiences. It’s rare that I come back to a game once I’ve put it down. Practically speaking, it just doesn’t fit my lifestyle.

Yet that was challenged this year by a little $5 video game: Vampire Survivors. I initially dove into it in February as I tinkered around with my Steam Deck, and I figured those few hours I spent with it were where I’d stop. As the year progressed and I found myself catching up on my backlog, though, I suddenly found myself gravitating back to the mini-action game. Sometimes it was just checking in for an hour every month, but by December, it was the only game I really wanted to boot up.

What makes the video game industry so exciting is that it’s still relatively young. Developers are still routinely discovering new ways to turn the medium on its head, redefining the idea of what a game is by bucking against trends. Though major productions like God of War Ragnarok are no doubt impressive, the most groundbreaking titles are often the less obvious ones.

That was the case in 2022, which saw developers entirely deconstructing some fundamentals about games. In some cases, that was expressed through new approaches to gameplay, creating experiences that are unlike anything I’ve ever seen from the medium. Others were even more high-level, challenging us to think about who certain projects are for. From a massive remake project to the tiniest action game, these were some of 2022’s most innovative games.

There are plenty of brand-new games to enjoy in 2022, but sometimes you just want to revisit an old classic. Game companies are keenly aware of this, so the plethora of original titles that release each year always comes with a heaping helping of remasters and remakes that update old games for a new console. The Last of Us Part I

The Last of Us Part I earned backlash when it was announced due its $70 pricing and how readily available the PS4 remaster of this PS3 classic is, but that doesn't mean The Last of Us Part I isn't a good remake. This is the best that The Last of Us has ever looked, with that extremely polished and graphically impressive detail that we've come to expect from PlayStation's big AAA exclusives. Its chilling tale about the lengths people will go to so they don't feel loss again is as poignant as ever, and experiencing it again may get you hyped for the upcoming HBO Max show. Most importantly, The Last of Us Part I features a massive and thorough amount of accessibility options, so players with disabilities finally have to tools to experience this masterpiece of a game for the first time. It might feel unnecessary, but The Last of Us Part I sets a standard that other remasters should follow.
