Getting fast and furious in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel’s Stingray

Walking around is stupid, right? It certainly is when you’re in an airless environment with only a limited supply of oxygen and a vast assortment of ruffians, robots, and moon monsters gunning for your face. That’s life in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, but it doesn’t always have to be so dangerous. Not when you’ve got a Stingray handy.

2K Australia created two new vehicles for The Pre-Sequel‘s Elpis (that’s Pandora’s moon) adventures, both of which are accessible from Moon Zoomy kiosks (think Scooter’s Catch-A-Ride, except there’s no Scooter). The Moon Buggy is pretty much what you’d expect: a four-wheeled jeep that’s build to roll around on the low-gravity surface of Elpis. You can kit it out as either a Laser Moon Buggy or a Missile Pod Moon Buggy, the latter of which fires clusters of tiny explosives that home in on their targets. It’s a good time.

But why roll when you can float? The Stingray is effectively a hover-ATV. With four repulsors where its tires would be, the zippy little cruiser speeds around the surface of Elpis with little trouble. It doesn’t have a turbo boost like the Moon Buggy does, but it does have the ability to hover higher up in the air using LB (Xbox 360 controller). The hover ability is useful not just for extending airtime during a long jump across a yawning chasm; you can also use it to perform a vehicular slam attack, damaging any nearby enemies.

If that’s not enough offensive firepower, the Stingray is also equipped with a front-facing laser cannon (pew pew!) and either a Flak Cannon or Cryo Rockets as its secondary. As with most other Borderlands vehicles, the Stingray is just as effective a tool for destruction as it is a personal conveyance.

There’s not a whole lot more to it than that. Float around, shoot things, squash the occasional pest with the power of your repulsors, rinse, repeat. Check out the Stingray in action right here…

Embracer Group finally sells Gearbox Software, but keeps Gearbox Publishing

Embracer Group finally confirmed that it is selling Borderlands studio Gearbox Entertainment to Take-Two Interactive, but there's a catch: Embracer Group will retain ownership of Gearbox Publishing.

Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Entertainment in 2021 but is now offloading much of it as part of a restructuring plan meant to recoup money after a deal fell through in 2023. Take-Two Interactive's 2K already published all the Borderlands games, so it's a sensible $460 million purchase that also nets them franchises like Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem. In terms of studios, Take-Two Interactive is only acquiring Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal, and Gearbox Studio Quebec, the company's primary development arms. Randy Pitchford will remain CEO as well.

WWE 2K24 makes one small change that goes a very long way

The WWE 2K series has been living out a comeback story for the past two years. After hitting rock bottom in 2019, 2K Games took the time and effort to rehabilitate the series instead of rushing into another entry with injuries. That paid off in its 2022 and 2023 installments, reestablishing the series as the king of the ring – especially after fighting off competition from the middling AEW: Fight Forever.

The original version of Mafia II hit consoles in 2010, while the remastered Mafia II: Definitive Edition arrived 10 years later. Neither version is without flaws, and if you're expecting something as good or as polished as a Grand Theft Auto game, then you're going to be disappointed. But if you're looking for a compact crime story that you can finish between longer games, then there's more than enough here in Mafia II to recommend playing it.
Band of bros
Mafia II's best asset in 2010 was its story, and the same is true for the definitive edition. The game plays out as a mixture of The Godfather and Goodfellas. That may not be groundbreaking territory, but it's got enough plot and character to get players through the game's storyline. Some fans may not appreciate how linear it is, but it never lets up on the story and it actually lets gamers worry about its heroes when their good fortune inevitably goes bad.
