GTA 5’s PS5 port is being delayed, so keep playing it on your old consoles

Sony’s Showcase gave us what seems like our 100th look at Grand Theft Auto 5 — and this time it’s a new enhanced PlayStation 5 port.

Grand Theft Auto 5 released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It released again in 2014 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. That release was followed up by another in 2015 for Microsoft Windows. Now, it’s coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S sometime in March.

The reveal trailer for this enhanced edition promises improved graphics, but going off visuals and fan response, not too much has really changed (aside from fans getting increasingly annoyed at a lack of GTA6 news).

First off they said November like a month ago, second it looks the exact same game💀💀💀

As stated in the tweet above, Grand Theft Auto 5‘s enhanced port for new-gen consoles has been pushed back to 2022. It originally was slated for a November release. Rockstar has yet to share the cause for that delay (though, again, it’s likely not because of GTA6).

Beyond what was shown in the new reveal trailer, Rockstar has also stated that there will be “seamless” switching between the main characters during the game, which is the most familiar gimmick of this new console generation.

Grand Theft Auto 5 and its accompanying Grand Theft Auto Online are coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022, though no firm date was given. For those who can’t wait and still haven’t played GTA 5, you can find it for cheap on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows right now on digital marketplaces and stores everywhere.

You can also get Grand Theft Auto Online for free for a limited time at launch on the PlayStation 5.

The best GTA characters of all-time
The protagonists of GTA V pose for the camera.

Ever since the GTA franchise became what it is today with Grand Theft Auto 3, Rockstar has packed their worlds full of colorful and rich characters. While we've only been able to control male characters up until now (though that is set to change if the GTA 6 rumors are true), they have all had distinct and interesting personalities and stories. That said, sometimes it's the side characters that can steal the show too. Looking back at the entire series, we've come up with our picks for the best GTA characters of all time.
Carl 'CJ' Johnson -- GTA: San Andreas

Good old Carl Johnson, better known as CJ, is way more than just a meme. San Andreas was the second game in the series to really focus on character in a major way, and the team nailed it with their lead. Not only was the entire cast filled with bonafide actors, but CJ's personal story as a gang member whose mother is murdered was far more nuanced and emotional than the media would lead you to believe. The real draw was the relationship CJ had with the main antagonist Officer Tenpenny (who may or may not be mentioned later on). This game set the standard for how Rockstar would reveal more about the characters and world through casual conversation throughout the story.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was too broken to review on PS5
Gollum stares at the eye of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum key art.

Update (5/26): We returned to the PlayStation 5 version of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum after Update version 1.003.000 was released, and have found the experience has improved notably. It does still feature plenty of bugs, which we experienced on the PC version, but it's far more stable on console now. Progression-preventing glitches have disappeared, and the updated PS5 version has yet to crash on us. If you're grabbing the game on console, make sure to download the patch before starting.

What's unclear is how many of the problems were actually fixed. During the review period, Nacon's PR team attributed Gollum's performance problems in part to a setting that animated the character's hair. The patch appears to remove that option from the game entirely. It's likely that the problems the toggle was causing still persist behind the scenes, so it's hard to say if the game was fully fixed, so much as a problem feature was cut.

Humanity is the best PS5 (and PSVR2) game I’ve played so far
Humans jump over a gap in Humanity.

Over the past few years, I’ve found myself mourning the PlayStation brand I grew up with. When I was a kid, PlayStation was an eccentric platform home to the kind of oddball creative swings you now only ever see indie publishers take a chance on. In the PS5 era, though, Sony has doubled down on a cinematic action-adventure formula that feels less safe (though likely way more profitable) by comparison. It’s an understandable pivot, but it leaves me hungry for more diverse experiences on my PS5.

Thankfully, that desire has been satiated with Humanity, a game that’s already nabbing several impressive accolades from me. It’s the best reason to subscribe to PS Plus, the best game currently available on PlayStation VR2, and perhaps the best PS5 console-exclusive period (it’s also available on PC via Steam). The unique puzzler has all the markings of those left-field PlayStation classics I love … except for the fact it wasn’t developed or published by Sony at all.
