Half-Life 2: Update breathes new life into City 17

half life 2 update free on steam
Half-Life 2 was and remains one of the greatest shooters of its time, but as the game is now over 10 years old, it isn’t looking quite as impressive as it once did. With Valve seemingly uninterested in giving the game the remaster treatment as so many other developers are doing recently, fans have taken it upon themselves to do so.

The remaster, simply named Half-Life 2: Update, is freely downloadable for owners of the original game, and it became available on Steam yesterday. This Half-Life 2 mod “offers both longtime fans and first-time players the most visually advanced, stable, and fully featured version of Half-Life 2 to date in one free mod download,” according to its Steam page.

Developed by fans and lead by community member Filip Victor, the mod offers a slew of new features including High Dynamic Range Lighting, improved fog, and new particle effects. It also fixes a number of bugs — both visual and gameplay-related — that remained in the game after all these years.

In addition to the cleaned-up visuals and squashed bugs, the mod also includes a Community Commentary Mode with voices of well-known YouTubers including Ross Scott from Freeman’s Mind, a series of videos that voiced the thoughts of the game’s silent protagonist.

One thing fans won’t have to worry about is changes to the gameplay. Victor said “While developing the update, I needed to make sure that no matter what I did, I was improving Half-Life 2‘s world without changing its iconic style, tone, or gameplay,” speaking to GameSpot. “Half-Life 2: Update shouldn’t be seen as a mod, but as a true update to what is already there.”

The download weighs in at 7 GB, which is nearly twice the size of the original game. While the system requirements are quite a bit more than the original game, if you are able to run Half-Life 2: Episode 1 or Half-Life 2: Episode 2, you should have no issues with this mod.

It's a cause for celebration, especially for those who particularly vibe with the whole October spooky season aesthetic.

Overwatch 2 Junker Queen guide: abilities, strategies, counters, and more
Overwatch 2 Junker Queen

The hero roster for Overwatch 2 is massive. Not only do you have the entire cast returning from the first game, but there will be three brand new heroes right at launch, plus even more scheduled to come in later seasons. Naturally, these new heroes will be the most appealing for anyone who has been playing the game for a long time and is looking for a new experience. Each of the three new heroes, Sojourn, Kiriko, and Junker Queen, fill one of the game's three roles of Damage, Support, and Tank.

Junker Queen is the new Tank class hero, which has been given a lot more importance in the meta with Overwatch 2. Now that the game has slimmed down the team sizes to just five-versus-five, with only one Tank allowed per team, whoever fills that role has a lot of responsibility on their shoulders. If you're picking Junker Queen, it would be wise to at least know a few tactics before launching into a competitive match where an entire team is depending on you. Here's a full Junker Queen guide to get you started.

Overwatch 2 hit with second DDoS attack as long queues persist
Sombra's new look in Overwatch 2.

Another distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack has plagued Overwatch 2 just one day after its launch. The attack occurred early Wednesday, merely eight hours after the first DDoS attack caused servers to go awry. The issue is contributing to the game's continued queue size issues, which has players waiting hours to get into a round.

Overwatch 2 developer Aaron Keller confirmed the second DDoS attack on Twitter, telling fans the team has been working to stabilize the servers. He wrote, "We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack," He wrote. "We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience -- we’ll share more info as it becomes available."
