Throughout the course of Homefront: The Revolution‘s campaign, players can loot their surroundings in search of materials that can be used to upgrade their arsenals. Weapons can now be modified to suit multiple combat configurations, allowing players to drastically alter their favorite firearms in order to better approach the game’s challenges.
Homefront: The Revolution offers universal weapons attachments that instantly change firearm characteristics while on the battlefield. By equipping specific attachments, players can turn an automatic weapon into a sniper rifle, or outfit a shotgun with fully automatic capabilities.
Other weapons and tactical equipment introduced in Homefront: The Revolution include player-controlled sentries, drones, IEDs, and hacking tools that can be used to turn enemy turrets against their operators. One of the game’s more unconventional weapons is an RC car that players can park underneath enemy vehicles and detonate for explosive results.
This week’s trailer also hints at how players can use the game’s open-world framework to their advantage. Stealthy players can infiltrate enemy strongholds by traveling along unguarded routes, and rescue missions can be attempted at night in order to minimize confrontations.
Homefront: The Revolution is a sequel to 2011’s Homefront, a first-person shooter from developer Kaos Studios. The Homefront games feature a storyline in which a unified Korea has occupied the western United States with a military force. Players take on a role in an American guerrilla resistance force as they fight to take down their oppressors.
The Homefront franchise was previously in limbo following the bankruptcy of publisher THQ, and developer Crytek afterward acquired the rights to produce new entries in the series. Crytek subsequently sold off these rights to Koch Media, which then put subsidiary Deep Silver in charge of publishing future Homefront games.
Homefront: The Revolution will launch for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PCs on May 17, 2016.
