Horizon Forbidden West multiplayer spinoff confirmed by Guerrilla Games

A tweet about available job openings at developer Guerrilla Games confirmed the existence of an online game set in the same universe as Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.

“We are continuing to create epic solo adventures for Aloy. But there is more,” a tweet by LifeAtGuerrilla says. “A new internal team is developing a separate Online Project set in Horizon’s universe. Featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look, friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together.”

Rumors about this Horizon Online Project first emerged in an MP1ST report in October 2022 that also claimed a remaster or remake of Horizon Zero Dawn for PS5 was in the works. Guerilla Games’ tweet does not mention any potential Horizon Zero Dawn re-release.

Similar to Blizzard’s survival game and Respawn’s Star Wars games’ reveals earlier this year, this announcement is almost solely related to job openings so details on the game itself are scarce. Guerrilla Games is still in the process of hiring animators, artists, game designers, and writers for the game, so it’s likely a way out from release. It’ll likely be part of PlayStation’s upcoming live service push, which will also impact series like The Last of Us.

The Horizon Online Project does not have a release date, but we now know it is in active development at Guerrilla Games. In the interim, PlayStation Studios announced at The Game Awards 2022 that the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores expansion will be released exclusively for PS5 on April 19, 2023. Guerrilla’s message also suggests that we can expect a follow-up to Horizon Forbidden West starring Aloy eventually.

Aloy is no stranger to picking up all sorts of random junk in Horizon Forbidden West. Whether it's sticks and rocks for crafting, or ancient relics from the world prior to the robotic uprising, you'll be stopping every couple of steps to grab something in the massive open world. Collectibles are essentially mandatory for open-world games, and the Horizon series continues to hide a bunch of these secret trinkets across the map in the sequel, but with far more variety and types this time around.

Right alongside collectibles, Easter eggs are another common features developers like to tuck away in hidden corners of their open worlds. Sony's first-party studios have lately been using Easter eggs as a way to give a friendly nod to their sibling studios, such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart featuring Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper through a secret weapon. Horizon Forbidden West is the latest major first-party release and has made a few references to another major franchise in the form of three collectible War Totem Easter egg items.

By the end of her first outing in Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy was a fearless robot dinosaur hunter. Early on she may have struggled with the smaller predators, but by the end of the game she was equipped to go head to head against the titanic Thunderjaws and live to tell the tale. While her arsenal of weapons certainly played a large part in her ability to strip down these hulking machines until they were piles of scrap, her skills were just as, if not more, important to her success. However, even though Horizon Forbidden West only takes place a few months after the first game, Aloy has come down with a severe case of the Metroids and lost just about every ability she had.

Starting from scratch is almost expected from RPG sequels. Some abilities can carry over, but you would generally be way too powerful in the beginning for there to be much challenge. In Horizon Forbidden West's case, the game's developers also took this opportunity to completely overhaul the skill system. There's now a much more diverse and playstyle-specific skill tree system to let players focus their build to best suit how they want to approach the game. But with six skill trees and dozens of skills within them, knowing which are the best, especially early on, can be daunting. We didn't know what to expect when Guerrilla Games, previously known for its work on the FPS Killzone franchise, announced that its next game would be an open-world, third-person action RPG. The fact that it was set in a post-apocalyptic world where robotic dinosaurs faced off against primitive humans wielding bows and spears was enough to get people interested, though, and the resulting game, Horizon Zero Dawn, was a smash hit. There were a few rough edges, but it had just about everything players wanted in a new open-world experience.

The success of that first game almost made it a certainty that a sequel would come around to improve on all those new ideas. Horizon Forbidden West does just that, expanding on basically every aspect and mechanic of the first game to a massive degree.
