Hotline Miami slaughters its way onto Sony’s PS Vita and PlayStation 3

Hotline Miami
Sony is teaming up with publisher Devolver Digital to bring another of 2012’s indie darlings, Hotline Miami, to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

“Our team have been fans of Hotline Miami from the very start and we are absolutely thrilled to have such a brilliant game launch on the PlayStation platform, said Sony Europe’s Shahid Ahmad, “The intense visuals and pulsing soundtrack are perfectly suited for PS3 and PS Vita and we can’t wait for PlayStation fans to see what Hotline Miami is all about.”

To translate from the public relations speak: Hotline Miami sold 300,000 copies as a digital download on PC in 2012, and Sony sees an opportunity in those sales numbers. It helps that Hotline Miami is a critical hit, helping Sony maintain its reputation as a purveyor of more creatively daring content than the average international corporation with struggling hardware and huge R&D costs. Hotline Miami is a cost-effective way to boost Sony’s slim PS Vita library, its slowing PS3 library, and its indie cred.

Unfortunately Hotline Miami creator Dennaton Games isn’t handling the new version. Those duties have been passed to Abstraction Games, the Netherlands-based developer behind WiiWare and PS Minis ports of mobile games like Cut the Rope and Angry Birds.

Independent video game development has been booming for years now, but 2012 was an especially good year for studios out on their own making spectacular games. Accolades aplenty were given to Telltale Games for The Walking Dead, Polytron’s Fez, and thatgamecompany’s JourneyJourney in particular was unusual as a PlayStation 3 exclusive. That game represents Sony’s conflicting impulses in the game industry. It continues to cling to the old paradigm of closed platforms, but it also wants to fund and publish artistically challenging games. Case in point: Hotline Miami.

Sony’s future lies in games like Hotline Miami, but before it can fully capitalize on their success, it needs to bring down barriers between the games and its audience. Hotline Miami is a $10 game but the PS Vita is nearly $350 after buying the console and a required memory card.

PlayStation 6 predictions: games we expect to see on PS6
A screenshot from The Story So Far in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

We're four years into the PlayStation 5's lifecycle, which means that we've likely hit the halfway point. Console generations tend to last around eight years these days, so it's not impossible that we'll get a PlayStation 6 by 2028. While it might seem way too early to start anticipating a far off console (and it is), the reality is that the groundwork for it is likely being laid as we speak. Large scale exclusives can take well over four years to produce, which means that some PS6 games could be in the works right this second.

Some of those games seem like foregone conclusions. We'll likely see new games in the God of War and Horizon series, as well as new IP from studios like Housemarque. As for the rest? We already have some firm ideas about what games will land on Sony's next console. That's partially thanks to studio confirmation, leaks, and some good old fashioned common sense. Here our best guesses as to what we might be playing on a shiny new PlayStation by 2030.

3 new PlayStation Plus games to check out this weekend (June 21-23)
Pagan Min attacks a soldier in Far Cry 4.

It's the middle of the month, so that means Sony just dropped a batch of new titles into the game catalog for PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra. While these additions aren't as high profile as some earlier months of the year, this group of new PS Plus games still has some winners that stand out as the cream of the crop. There are three games in particular that are worth hopping into this weekend.

First is a game from Capcom that will allow you to better understand the jump from Monster Hunter: World to Monster Hunter Wilds. Then, we have a classic Ubisoft open-world game that can get you primed for the release of Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Shadows later in 2024. Finally, there's a PlayStation VR2 game about kayaking that offers a relaxing virtual experience for those looking for an excuse to put on the VR headset.

Sony just put one final nail in the PlayStation VR2’s coffin
The PlayStation VR2 sits on a table next to Sense controllers.

PlayStation VR2 has been murdered. The culprit: Astro Bot.

My favorite announcement of Sony's May 30 State of Play was Astro Bot, a new 3D platformer from Team Asobi that celebrates PlayStation history. It looks incredibly charming and stands out from the typical narrative-action games like Stellar Blade that Sony tends to release these days. That said, my excitement also comes with disappointment as it does not appear that the game will support PlayStation VR2. (Digital Trends reached out to Sony to confirm that was the case but has not gotten a response at the time of publishing this story.)
