How to connect a PS4 controller to a Mac

sony playstation essentials sale 4 connect
Mac OS isn’t the gaming wasteland that it once was. The machines themselves are more powerful now, and an increasingly vast assortment of games, from AAA heavy-hitters to indie darlings, are baking in support for Apple’s PC hardware on day one.

It’s also easier than ever to get into the game thanks to Mac OS support for a variety of USB controllers. The PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 is a particular favorite for those that seek an alternative to mouse/keyboard setups. All you need is a Bluetooth-ready controller, a mini-USB cable, and your Mac.

Note: Before starting to connect a DualShock 4 to your Mac, we recommend you completely disconnect your PS4 console (if you have one). Doing so will help prevent you from accidentally turning on the console while syncing the controller to your machine.

Step 1: Turn on your Mac’s Bluetooth

You need to turn on your Mac’s Bluetooth functionality before you can properly connect your wireless PS4 controller to your machine. To do this, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the desktop, click System Preferences in the drop-down menu, and select the Bluetooth panel, then click Turn Bluetooth On.

Step 2: Pair the PS4 controller via Bluetooth

Once you’ve activated Bluetooth on your Mac, simultaneously press and hold the PlayStation and Share buttons until your controller’s light bar begins to blink rapidly. The controller should automatically appear beneath the Devices list in the Bluetooth panel if your computer utilizes Mac OS X Mavericks or later. Otherwise, you will need to click Add Device and locate the controller.

Once done, highlight the controller in the panel, click Pair, and enter “0000” if prompted for a password. You should now be able to use the PS4 controller with any controller-compatible title available for your system.

One of 2023’s most anticipated RPGs is coming to PS Plus on day one
The Solstice Warriors stand under a full moon in Sea of Stars' key art.

Sabotage Studio announced that its highly anticipated retro-style RPG Sea of Stars will be available as part of the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog when it releases on August 29.
Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by classic games like Chrono Trigger, where the main heroes' powers are based around the sun and moon. Sea of Stars' distinct visual style and polished-looking gameplay has allowed this indie game to stand out alongside the liks of Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield, other RPGs that will release around the same time. Clearly, Sabotage wants to get this game in front of as many people as possible during this busy period for games, so it makes sense to put Sea of Stars on game subscription services.

It's in good company as a day one PS Plus Extra and Premium title, as it follows solid indies like Stray, Tchia, and Humanity. Sabotage also released a demo for Sea of Stars on PS4 and PS5 today so people can try a bit of the game early.
PS Plus Extra and Premium actually aren't the only subscription services that Sea of Stars will be on at launch. Previously, Sabotage had confirmed that the Xbox and PC versions of the game are launching on Xbox Game Pass on day one as well. So, if you have either of the major video game subscription services, you'll have ample opportunity to play the game across three platforms without having to pay for it. It will launch on Nintendo Switch, though, and you'll have to pay the full $35 price for it there.
Sea of Stars launches across Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, and Nintendo Switch on August 29.

Th best Oatchi skills to unlock in Pikmin 4
The player rides Oatchi in Pikmin 4

Oatchi is your newest and most faithful companion in Pikmin 4. This adorable dog-creature will be by your side for the majority of your adventure to help you and your Pikmin rescue all the Castaways. Unlike the cute, yet expendable Pikmin, Oatchi is one-0f-a-kind and even upgradable! Once you've teamed up with one, and progressed far enough to meet Shepherd, you will be able to teach this young pup a bunch of new tricks in exchange for Pup Drive. It might sound complicated, and when you see the list of possible skills and levels you can upgrade, even a little intimidating. Worry not, because we'll break down the best skills you should unlock for Oatchi in Pikmin 4.
How to unlock skills
We briefly touched on it, but the short version of teaching Oatchi new skills is by spending Pup Drive with Shephard. The option will become available to you after you rescue a Castaway named Russ from a cave and return back to the Rescue Command Post. The main way to earn Pup Drive is to rescue Castaways and Leaflings, with each one awarding you a single Pup Drive, as well as doing Dandori Battles and Challenges. You can also gain a Pup Drive during night expeditions by curing Leaflings with glow sap.

The set of skills you first see is not all that Oatchi is capable of learning. More will become available naturally as you play, such as learning to swim by going in water, or maxing out other skills.

The best gear to buy in Pikmin 4
The player stands with Oatchi and some Red Pikmin in Pikmin 4.

After surviving your crash landing, which itself was a mission to rescue other crashed explorers, you will need to use anything and everything you find in your environment to survive in Pikmin 4. The titular Pikmin, and your new pup Oatchi, will do the bulk of your work for you, but it will be up to you to craft your own gear to create in The Lab. There are dozens of gear items you can get, but all of them have a cost so you will want to prioritize getting the strongest ones first. This will make your early days trying to survive in this mysterious land that much easier. Gather up your Pikmin and do some research on the best gear you should buy in Pikmin 4.
How to buy gear

Before you can start buying gear, you need to unlock The Lab where it is sold. This will happen very early on after you rescue the castaway named Russ in a cave in the Sun-Speckled Terrace. Once he's back at your base, you can interact with him to spend any raw materials you collect around the map. Some gear items won't be available right away, requiring you to either do specific things or accumulate enough Sparklium first.
