It’s a cornucopia of Kirbies in Kirby Mass Attack teaser

All of Nintendo’s attention seems to be focused on the 3DS these days, but that doesn’t mean the company’s forgotten about the system’s 2-D predecessor. In fact, one of Nintendo’s fan-favorite icons has a new game arriving on the system next month, and he’s bringing along a few friends.

We previewed Kirby Mass Attack back in June during E3, when we found it hidden amongst all of Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS offerings, and now a new teaser for the game has debuted ahead of its arrival on shelves next month.

As we discussed in our E3 hands-on report and you can see in the new footage, Kirby’s upcoming adventure for the Nintendo DS offers a unique spin on the character’s usual side-scrolling adventures. This time around, players can recruit a crowd of Kirbies to their cause, and team up to overcome obstacles and gang up on enemies.

Use of the DS stylus plays heavily into the game’s strategy, with players diagramming the Kirbies’ approach and then launching a full-on Kirby feeding frenzy.

As always, Mass Attack continues the franchise trend of being ridiculously cute at all times, though we’re pretty sure that it also serves as an important lesson about feeding your Kirby after midnight. Don’t do it!

Kirby Mass Attack is scheduled for release September 19.

How to upgrade abilities in Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby drills a mole in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Like a much more cute, friendly, and kid-friendly Mega-Man, Kirby's claim to fame has been his ability to suck up enemies and absorb their powers to use as his own. Part of the fun of each game is to see what new powers this pink little ball of fun will get to play with, or what new spin on previous powers will be. In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, our charming hero might not have the most copy abilities he's ever had access to in a game, but aside from the new 3D world he inhabits, the game does offer a new and exciting way to make his copy abilities fresh for his latest outing.

After acquiring a copy ability, Kirby typically gets a new move or two related to whatever power he's picked up to use until he loses it or trades it out for a new one. Kirby and the Forgotten Land makes copy abilities a little more meaningful by allowing you to upgrade them at a special shop in the game's hub level, Waddle Dee Town. These upgrades can change a bunch of aspects of your favorite abilities, but unlocking the ability to do so, and what you need to do in order to upgrade different abilities, is a bit of a challenge. If you want to make your Kirby's copy abilities the most powerful they can possibly be in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, here's everything you need to know about how to upgrade all of his abilities.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land Colosseum guide and rewards
A gorilla swats Kirby in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby titles are known for being kid-friendly. The pink puffball of a character is all but invincible in most games, and even when he can "die," like in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, there is hardly any punishment for when it does happen. The adventure is meant to be more of a fun, carefree, and joyful romp through some inventive stages, easy puzzles, and perhaps mildly challenging (at best) boss battles. However, nearly every Kirby game does acknowledge that some people are looking for a deeper challenge in these games, and while they might not push you to the absolute limits, they can give you a nice bit of resistance.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land has plenty of end-game content -- again, a staple for Kirby -- but the biggest attraction for most challenge seekers will no doubt be the Colosseum. This battle arena will test you more than any regular stage in the game through gauntlets consisting of multiple rounds of tough mini-bosses, normal bosses, and even unique bosses only found there that put the normal ones to shame. If you're not ready for the difficulty spike, this can be a bit of a shock to a normal Kirby player. Worry not, because Kirby is one resilient ball of joy, especially when he absorbs all the information in our Colosseum guide.
