Logitech Goes Game Happy with G-Series

Logitech today rolled out several new products related to a specialty line of computer gaming hardware. The new G-series family of gaming grade peripherals includes the G15 keyboard, G7 Laser Cordless Mouse and G5 Laser Mouse.

The G15 keyboard ($79.99 – available October) features a built-in auxiliary LCD display which can be tilted and programmed to display vital in-game information such as score, times and health as well as information from other applications like incoming email. The keyboard also offers 18 programmable keys, called the G keys, and three mode keys. With each mode key, a G key can be programmed to serve a different command. Different combinations can be programmed depending upon the game and the keyboard will know which game is tied to those commands upon the game’s start. Other features on this keyboard also include backlit keys, media controls and two USB ports.

“PC gamers are continuously tweaking their systems to achieve peak performance and enhanced speed for that added edge to defeat an opponent,” said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech´s director of product marketing for interactive entertainment. “The Logitech G15 keyboard offers gamers unmatched levels of programmability, giving them a tactical edge in their quest to dominate. Also, the built-in LCD display provides game developers with a whole new way to display critical game information without distracting from the game itself.”

The G7 ($99.99) and G5 ($69.99) mice will both be available in September. Both mice use laser illumination and tracking to provide what Logitech says is “lightning quick movements” at up to 45 inches per second at 2000 dpi. The G7 is cordless, has a built-in battery level indicator and dual rechargeable packs. The G5 is more of a traditional cabled USB mouse and comes with 16 miniature round weights, eight weighing 1.7 grams and eight weighing 4.5 grams, of which up to eight can be distributed inside the base of the mouse via a cartridge to provide more weight to match a specific gaming or other need.

“These G-series mice are the culmination of our ongoing relationship with PC gamers,” said Ashish Arora, Logitech´s vice president of product marketing for retail pointing devices. “The feedback we´ve received from gamers is that their ideal mouse is a combination of the most advanced performance specs and the highest level of customization. With pixel precision, blazing speed, and customizable features, the G5 and the G7 mice certainly meet, and even exceed, the dream gaming mouse described to us by gamers around the world.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the culmination of the series’ rocky gaming history
Jedi Cal Kestis.

I've played Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's Coruscant heist opening multiple times at this point, and every time I play it, I can't help but think about what could've been with Star Wars 1313, the franchise's most infamous canceled game.
The idea of an Uncharted-like game about Boba Fett fighting throughout the Coruscant underworld is such an excellent pitch that I've grieved the loss of a game I never even had a chance to play for over a decade. Playing through Survivor's opening doesn't elicit feelings of disappointment about 1313, though. Instead, I feel happy that at least some fraction of that idea was able to be realized.

Survivor's Metroidanvia-like level design and Lightsaber-and-Force-based combat are much different than what was promised from 1313. However, the idea of cleverly climbing and fighting across a seedy-looking level of Coruscant during a heist was still realized. Reflecting on the lost project ahead of this year's Star Wars Day, I had a revelation about Respawn Entertainment's latest game. Despite technically being a sequel to just Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor feels like the culmination of over a decade of Star Wars games, both released and canceled, that came before.
A walk through Star Wars gaming history
Growing up, two of my favorite video games were the original Star Wars: Battlefront II and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. To this day, 2005's Battlefront II is my favorite game of all time, not only because of all the great memories that I had with it but also because it feels like an authentic Star Wars simulator where multiple eras, planets, and characters are preserved in incredible detail. Survivor feels like it has the same keen attention to detail.
Players may not visit as many planets as they do in Battlefront II, but each location in Survivor is densely packed with content and immaculately packed with detailed environments and characters that faithfully represent the High Republic, prequel, and Imperial eras. While the aesthetics feel as detailed as Battlefront, the gameplay fantasy pulls more from The Force Unleashed.

You can compete in the Olympics eSports Series by playing a $1 baseball game
A pitcher holds a ball in WBSC Baseball Power Pros.

A $1 baseball game shadow dropped by Konami during a Nintendo Direct, WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros was a very odd release in February. That said, the purpose of its launch and low price point is becoming clearer as the International Olympic Committee revealed that it's one of the featured games in its Olympic Esports Series 2023 lineup.
WBSC eBASEBALL: POWER PROS - Launch Trailer - Nintendo Switch
Starting this month, players can start competing in featured games like  Power Pros to qualify for the Olympic Esports Finals 2023, which will take place at Singapore's Suntec Centre between June 22 and June 25. A more arcade-like and low-poly take on the sport than something like MLB The Show 23, Power Pros was a fairly small-scale and simple game that mainly stood out because of its low price point. Clearly, its international baseball focus and approachability enticed the IOC, who've decided to elevate its esports status.
Esports has been popular for quite a while, although the most popular esports titles are games that can't really be emulated in real life, like Starcraft 2, League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Fortnite. The IOC is taking a decisively different approach with its esports competition, instead choosing to include games that emulate real-world sports, with the IOC calling it a "virtual and simulated sports competition." That ultimately results in an unexpected esports game lineup that also consists of Tic Tac Bow (archery), Virtual Regatta, Virtual Taekwondo, Zwift (cycling), Gran Turismo (motorsport), Just Dance, Tennis Clash, and Chess played on Chess.com.

This unorthodox approach to esports is why a Konami game like Power Pros, which came out less than a month ago, isn't the most in-depth baseball simulation out there, and only costs $1, made the cut. Still, there is something exciting about the barrier of entry for an official Olympic competition being this low.
WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros is available now for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

HBO’s The Last of Us show spotlights the series’ best game: Left Behind
Ellie and Riley ride a merry-go-round in The Last of Us.

While the bulk of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation retells the story of the first game, The Last of Us episode 7 is a special exception. That’s because it dives into DLC territory to bring The Last of Us: Left Behind to the small screen and give Bella Ramsey’s Ellie an hour to shine.

Left Behind is a 2014 expansion for The Last of Us that would later be purchasable as a standalone release. It's set in the middle of The Last of Us, as Ellie hunts for medical supplies for Joel in an abandoned Colorado mall. That setup acts as a frame tale, as the bulk of the game is a playable flashback. In it, we get to see a slice of Ellie’s life before she met Joel, as she explores another mall with her friend and budding love interest, Riley. It was a significant chapter of the series, as it confirmed Ellie’s sexual identity, but its also an important moment for games in general. Lesbian relationships weren’t generally depicted in AAA video games in 2014, and the idea of a tender kiss between two women was especially unheard of.
