Lost Ark had a historic debut weekend on Steam

Despite launching only three days ago, Lost Ark has already dominated Steam, becoming the second most played game ever on the platform.

Anyone who’s never heard of Lost Ark before today and might be wondering why the Diablo-inspired MMO is climbing Steam’s rankings so fast can’t be blamed. The game was originally released in South Korea in December 2019. Lost Ark was published in the United States and Europe on February 11 thanks to a partnership between developer Smilegate and Amazon. Within a day, the game rose through Steam’s concurrent player base, and, according to SteamDB, became the online retailer’s second most played game ever.

While that title is impressive, the numbers behind it are even more so. The current king of concurrent players of all time on Steam is PUBG: Battlegrounds, which has an all-time concurrent player peak of over 3 million. Lost Ark, comparatively, has had less than half that many players at its peak, topping off at 1,325,305 players. In reaching its current spot, the game has beaten out other massively popular games, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Valheim, and even Amazon’s own MMO, New World.

Outside of its all-time peak, Lost Ark is still drawing in thousands of concurrent players at a time. At the time of writing, the game is likewise the second-most played game on Steam with over 825,000 players. It’s beaten out only by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, although only by a mere 21,000 players.

Lost Ark‘s success could spell out bad news for New World, which has floundered since its launch. The MMO has only reached a peak of 48,228 players over the past 24 hours, a statistic that could drop even further if players are lured away by Lost Ark.

As the Steam Deck’s one-year anniversary approached, I found myself itching to write a reflection on my past 12 months with it. Though I love the gaming device and use it as much as my Nintendo Switch, I initially found my feelings skewing more negative than I expected. Part of that may have been a little reactionary, as I’ve developed a pet peeve in the past year: hearing people who work in games tout it as a “life-changing” device. Sure, it’s life-changing for anyone whose job hinges on having easy access to games, but some of the Steam Deck’s more frustrating quirks make it harder to recommend to a casual player.

My perspective changed when I chatted with Jacob Roach. Digital Trends’ Computing senior staff writer. As a PC gamer, his read on the system was entirely different from mine, focusing on game-changing features that I haven’t gotten much use out of. What became clear from that conversation is that the Steam Deck is a very different device depending on whether you’re coming at it from a PC or console background.

Amazon repeats its Lost Ark playbook to bring another international MMO to the West

Amazon Games announced today that it will publish NCSoft's fantasy MMORPG Throne and Liberty in North America, South America, Europe, and Japan. This cements a unique niche that Amazon Games has found for itself as a publisher: bringing Asian MMOs to the west.

Throne and Liberty is an ambitious MMO in development that includes fast-paced action combat, features large-scale PvE and PvP battles, and lets players transform into different creatures and control the environment during battles. The game has been in development for several years, but we didn't know if it'd get a Western release until now. With Amazon's backing, Throne and Liberty will now come out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in the West with full cross-play support.

While MMO fans will be happy at this announcement, this also demonstrates that Amazon Games has found a niche for itself as a game publisher by bringing Eastern MMOs to the West. For years, Amazon struggled to gain solid footing as a game developer and publisher, with multiple games canceled and titles like Crucible failing to gain traction. While MMOs aren't as popular as they used to be, Amazon has found a successful niche in trying to make the genre thrive again. It released New World to somewhat positive success, but really found a hit with the release of Lost Ark in February 2022.
Now, it's backing Bandai Namco's Blue Protocol and NCSoft's Throne and Liberty in hopes of repeating this success. Amazon Games Vice Preisident Christoph Hartmann explained what makes these kinds of games appealing in a press release.
"Publishing games that live and grow over time remains a critical piece of our strategy, and delivering games of the highest quality from the world’s most talented developers is one of the cornerstones of our business," Hartmann writes. "The last year has taught us a great deal about publishing and managing a successful live-service game on a global scale, and we’re ready to bring Throne and Liberty players an incredible experience at launch."
It remains to be seen if either of those games will reach Lost Ark's level of success and if Amazon Games plans to do this with even more Eastern MMOs. Outside of the MMO space, Amazon Games will also be publishing the next Tomb Raider game.
