Madden NFL 21 reveals unlikely SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration

Nickelodeon has teamed up with EA to create a collection of SpongeBob SquarePants-themed content for Madden NFL 21. The surprising collaboration features a SpongeBob arena for the game’s Yard mode and a collection of cosmetics based on the cartoon.

The new update, which is available to download right now, adds a new Reef-Top location to The Yard. The field features several signature touches from the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, including the iconic pineapple house and a giant inflatable SpongeBob hovering above the field.

The update comes with new modes that can be played at the location. In the new Goo Lagoon Bowl, players have to navigate a field of goo that slows them down. The Sandy’s Rocket Arm Rally allows players to launch passes of over 80 yards. The Flying Dutchman’s Ghostly Grab awards players points for making big catches.

In addition to the new modes, the update brings new SpongeBob-inspired gear to the game, which players can earn by completing challenges in the Reef-Top locale. A trailer shows players sporting bright yellow uniforms and gear emblazoned with characters including Patrick.

The update may seem entirely left-field, but this isn’t the first collaboration between Nickelodeon and the NFL brand this year. The channel will host ththis weekend’s NFL wild card playoff game between the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints. Nickelodeon will air a pregame special hosted by Denver Broncos star LB Von Miller.

The update is currently live in Madden NFL 21. EA says it will drop more content in the next few weeks, including gear capsules inspired by the show’s wide cast of characters. Hopefully, SpongeBob can avoid getting the Madden Curse.

New Atari 50 DLC shows the Intellivision acquisition is already paying off
An Atari 2600+ sits on a table.

Digital Eclipse's Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is an excellent and comprehensive look back at the company's now classic video game lineup, with games to play and extra content to interact with. So far, it's gotten one DLC: The Wider World of Atari, that added even more titles. Now, it's about to get its second, thanks to an acquisition it made earlier this year.

Atari announced The First Console War on Friday, and it's about, as you can guess, the company's first console war with the Intellivision, although it'll touch on a specific element of it. In the 1980s, Mattel was publishing games on the Intellivision. At some point, it decided to release versions of these console exclusives for its main competitor, the Atari 2600, under the M Network label. There are 19 of these games coming to Atari 50 with The First Console War, which is set to launch on November 8 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 Atari 50 owners.
