‘Mario Kart Tour’ will reportedly be ‘free-to-start’ like ‘Super Mario Run’

Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo’s fifth smartphone game, will reportedly take a page from the playbook of Super Mario Run. According to Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki, Mario Kart Tour will be “free-to-start” when it launches on iOS and Android devices.

DeNA CEO said "Mario Kart Tour," a Nintendo-DeNA smartphone game planned for FY18, will be free-to-start.

What exactly does this mean? Well, when Super Mario Run launched in 2016, iOS users could download the app for free and sample the first world before forking over $10 for the full experience. While scant details have been revealed about Mario Kart’s foray onto smartphones, the nature of Mario Kart games could lend itself well to this model. For example, perhaps the first cup (four tracks) will be free, but to unlock the remaining cups, you have to shell out a one-time fee.

Although the free-to-start model makes a bunch of sense for a game like Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo hasn’t divulged any concrete information about the game. It’s always possible that Nintendo goes the route of its other mobile games with a free-to-play model. Both Fire Emblem Heroes and, more recently, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp offered “free” experiences that attempted to entice users with microtransactions.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo wasn’t exactly happy with Super Mario Run’s sales figures. According to a 2017 earnings report, Super Mario Run had been downloaded 200 million times but failed to reach the targeted 10 percent conversion rate of downloads to full purchases. While the report didn’t reveal the actual conversion rate, we know that at the 78 million download mark, only five percent of downloads resulted in a sale.

Perhaps Nintendo is banking on Mario Kart Tour to outperform Super Mario Run. And if it’s a full Mario Kart experience with a variety of tracks and multiplayer, we wouldn’t bet against it. Mario Kart is a franchise that draws interest from both gamers and non-gamers alike. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the most recent entry in the series, has sold more than 7 million units, which means that roughly half of all Nintendo Switch owners purchased a copy of the game.

Mario Kart Tour will launch on iOS and Android devices sometime in Nintendo’s 2018 fiscal year, which ends in March 2019.

Mario Kart Tour microtransactions land Nintendo in legal trouble
mario kart tour launch day record nintendo mobile

Nintendo is facing a new lawsuit over its previous implementation of microtransactions in the mobile game Mario Kart Tour.
Mario Kart Tour first launched on iOS and Android in 2019 and used to have a loot box-like system where players could spend real money to activate Spotlight Pipes, which had undisclosed odds of granting players useful items and upgrades. Nintendo removed Spotlight Pipes from Mario Kart Tour in a September 2022 update, but Axios reports that a new class-action lawsuit has been filed against Nintendo over its previous implementation of them in the game.
The suit calls the mobile game's microtransactions "immoral" and is based on the belief that the game was intentionally difficult to progress in without spending money. Its plaintiff believes this "capitalized on and encouraged addictive behaviors akin to gambling" in all players, specifically the minors that'd be interested in trying a Mario Kart game on mobile, with them having spent $170 on those microtransactions. As such, it suit is demanding Nintendo issue refunds to all minors who spent money on Spotlight Pipes when they were available in Mario Kart Tour.
The loot box-like style of microtransactions that used to be present in Mario Kart Tour was fairly common in a lot of games with microtransactions. That said, it has fallen out of favor in recent years thanks to increased scrutiny from regulators and lawsuits like this that argue the undisclosed odds tied to these systems are too similar to gambling. As such, microtransactions in many recent games tend to be more direct or actively disclose what players will get once they spend money.
Nintendo seemed to be aware of this when it removed Spotlight Pipes from Mario Kart Tour last year, but that clearly wasn't enough for this plaintiff. Nintendo has not commented on this lawsuit, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on how this plays out.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks like the games, but their spirit is missing
Mario and Peach walk through a mushroom field in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

It's already safe to say that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a rousing success. Despite a middling critical reception, the animated film smashed box-office records like blocks in its opening weekend and is currently earning high audience scores. That all but assures that Nintendo and Illumination’s cinematic partnership will continue, bringing more sequels and spinoffs set in the Mushroom Kingdom. This is the long-in-the-works start of Mario’s on-screen empire.

And I can’t help but feel just a little disappointed by that.

7. Toad

Though Toad may be the weakest member of the main cast, he never had much time to show off his skills as a fighter in this film. Fortunately for him, he knows his way around the Mushroom Kingdom and can surely fend for himself out in the wilderness since Mario does meet him wandering the mushroom fields. And despite his small size, Toad never backs down from a fight, choosing to defend Peach and his friends at any opportunity.
