Super Mario Bros. movie coming next December with wild voice cast

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Super Mario series, confirmed that the long-awaited Super Mario Bros. movie will come to North American theaters on December 21, 2022. Nintendo and Illumination, the Hollywood studio responsible for animated blockbusters like Despicable Me, have been collaborating on the project since 2018. Worldwide dates aren’t confirmed yet, but it should land sometime during the 2022 holiday season.

The Nintendo Direct didn’t reveal much about the movie. Its story, setting, and even its official name are still a mystery. However, it did introduce the main cast. This brand-new Mario adventure stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Other smaller roles include Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario since 1992, will reportedly appear throughout the movie in a cameo.

Miyamoto says it might be a while until he and Illumination have enough footage to show fans. Hopefully, this film at least outdoes the Super Mario Brothers movie from the 1990s, which is considered a universal flop among video game fans. The new movie might even make the list of best video game movies of all time.

It's already safe to say that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a rousing success. Despite a middling critical reception, the animated film smashed box-office records like blocks in its opening weekend and is currently earning high audience scores. That all but assures that Nintendo and Illumination’s cinematic partnership will continue, bringing more sequels and spinoffs set in the Mushroom Kingdom. This is the long-in-the-works start of Mario’s on-screen empire.

And I can’t help but feel just a little disappointed by that.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie fulfilled many fans' dreams of seeing their favorite video game characters fight it out on the big screen. Though Toad may be the weakest member of the main cast, he never had much time to show off his skills as a fighter in this film. Fortunately for him, he knows his way around the Mushroom Kingdom and can surely fend for himself out in the wilderness since Mario does meet him wandering the mushroom fields. And despite his small size, Toad never backs down from a fight, choosing to defend Peach and his friends at any opportunity.

Nintendo’s Super Mario series is so monumental to the medium of video games that you might even think of the mustachioed plumber when you hear “video games” mentioned at all. From his earliest days as “Jumpman” battling Donkey Kong, to his latest adventures on the Nintendo Switch, to his latest movie appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario has consistently been one of the greatest characters in video games. He’s such an iconic character that countless video games have had him as the star, and we attempted to rank them.

For our list, we had two main criteria. First, the games have to be platformers -- either 2D or 3D. This eliminates Mario sports games, the Mario Kart series, role-playing games, and all the Mario Parties. Secondly, the games have to have Mario himself as the lead character. This eliminated Super Mario Land 3 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. In the end, we were left with 20 games. None of them are bad, but we did have to name a loser. We also chose to omit The Lost Levels and instead considered Super Mario Bros. 2 as the definitive second game in the series.
